2021 Toyota Corolla Reviews Summary

Everybody knows somebody who owns or has owned a Toyota Corolla. Thanks to a deserved reputation for affordability, reliability, and efficiency, the Corolla is what comes to mind when all you want is a cheap, dependable, and thrifty set of wheels.

Over the nameplate’s 55-year history, Toyota built a handful of Corollas that were anything but rolling appliances. But those fun-to-drive gems were relative rarities. Under the tenure of Akio Toyoda, the automaker’s current president and a man who loves to drive, the Corolla has become something more than a bore. It’s a car that makes you want to cruise instead of snooze.

We’re talking about the Corolla SE and XSE, of course. Toyota still makes dull and duller versions of its compact car, but the SE and XSE trim levels add some spice to the basic commuter-car recipe.

This model year, the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE is available in a new limited-production Apex Edition flavour. It’s got a track-tuned sport suspension, a lowered ride height, revised steering calibration, a sport exhaust system, and lightweight 18-inch gloss black aluminum alloy wheels. Unfortunately, it also comes with a “Lookit me, Officer, I like to go fast!” body kit.

Fearing this would be the example Toyota sent to us for review, we instead happily accepted the key fob to a Barcelona Red Corolla XSE and discovered that you don’t need the Apex Edition treatment to enjoy driving this car.

2022 Mazda MAZDA3 Reviews Summary

With the departure of the grossly underappreciated Mazda6 midsize sedan, Mazda has just two cars left in its lineup: the iconic MX-5 and the compact 2022 Mazda3. Good thing for Mazda they’re both highly desirable. This year, a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint colour is available.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Corolla

8/10

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Corolla, particularly in its SE and XSE trims, was a notable departure from its predecessors in terms of aesthetics. With sport-design bumpers, a mesh grille insert, and 18-inch aluminum wheels, it presented a more dynamic and appealing look, especially when adorned in Celestite metallic paint. However, certain design elements, such as the hood shut line and the over-styled rear bumper, detracted from its overall appeal. The Corolla offered a range of trims, including the more discreet L, LE, and XLE, as well as a hybrid variant, providing options for those prioritizing fuel efficiency.

In contrast, the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 was available in both sedan and hatchback forms, with a design that was not universally appealing due to its deeply sculpted flanks and the hatchback's "hunchback" appearance. Despite this, the Mazda3 exuded a mature and serious aesthetic, devoid of flashy spoilers or body kits. Inside, the Mazda3's cabin was a testament to refined materials and sophisticated design, offering an upscale environment. The car's understated elegance and quality made it an attractive option for those seeking a more premium feel without the associated luxury price tag.

Performance

2021 Toyota Corolla

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Corolla SE and XSE models were equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. This engine was paired with a Dynamic Shift CVT, which included paddle shifters and a Sport driving mode. The CVT was praised for its mechanical first gear, which improved initial acceleration, and its ten programmed ratios that mitigated the typical droning associated with CVTs. The Corolla's TNGA platform contributed to its low centre of gravity and enjoyable driving dynamics, making it a competent compact car with predictable handling. Fuel efficiency was a strong point, with an average consumption of 7.6 L/100 km during testing.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 offered a range of engine options, starting with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine delivering 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Most buyers opted for the 2.5-litre non-turbo engine, which provided 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, available with AWD, offered up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. Despite its power, the turbocharged Mazda3 struggled with fuel efficiency, averaging 10.2 L/100 km. The car's driving experience was characterized by smooth power delivery, nimble handling, and excellent balance, although the brakes showed signs of fade during aggressive driving.

Form and function

The 2021 Toyota Corolla XSE trim offered several interior upgrades, including SofTex leatherette seats, heated front and rear seats, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat. While the front seats provided good support and comfort, the rear seats were less accommodating due to limited headroom and legroom. The Corolla sedan's trunk offered 371 litres of cargo space, with the hatchback variant providing 660 litres behind the rear seats.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3's interior was designed with the driver in mind, featuring an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat and heated front seats. The snug fit and excellent support made for a comfortable driving experience, although the back seat was less accommodating for taller passengers. Storage space was adequate, with large door bins and a sizable centre console. The hatchback offered 569 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,334 litres with the seats folded down.

Technology

The 2021 Toyota Corolla came equipped with an impressive infotainment package, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth as standard features. The XSE trim added Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Remote Connect, offering features like remote engine starting and a vehicle finder function. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with physical knobs and buttons for easy navigation.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 featured the Mazda Connect infotainment system, which used an 8.8-inch display and a collection of controls on the centre console. While Mazda's approach aimed to reduce driver distraction, the lack of a physical tuning function and a cumbersome voice recognition system were drawbacks. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration provided alternative options for users. Mazda Connected Services offered remote access to vehicle functions, and higher trims included a Bose audio system and an Active Driving Display.

Safety

The 2021 Toyota Corolla boasted the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite, which included adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assistance, among other features. The Corolla's safety systems performed well, with minor issues in adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance. The 2020 model received top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, and the 2021 model was expected to maintain these ratings.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, although many were not standard in Canada. The car's safety systems performed reliably, with smooth adaptive cruise control and effective lane-keeping assistance. The Mazda3 received top safety ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS, earning a Top Safety Pick+ designation.
