2021 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a competitive compact SUV for buyers looking to satisfy the needs of the typical family. For the 2021 model year, Mazda has enhanced the model’s tech and discontinued the unpopular diesel engine. There’s also a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers to choose from. Despite the changes, the highlights and quibbles about the SUV are mostly unchanged from the 2020 model year.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

Look and feel

2021 Mazda CX-5

9/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 was a testament to Mazda's unique design philosophy, standing out with its smooth and sleek exterior that exuded a sense of motion even when stationary. While it didn't boast the aggressive styling of some competitors, it offered a refined and stylish alternative to the typical compact SUV. The base model, CX-5 GX, came equipped with practical features like automatic LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers, while higher trims like the GS and GT added luxury touches such as leatherette seats and a Bose audio system. The top-tier Signature trim elevated the CX-5 to a near-premium level with Nappa leather and genuine wood trim, rivaling more expensive brands.

In contrast, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 introduced subtle yet impactful exterior updates, including new LED headlights and taillights, revised bumpers, and a redesigned grille. These changes aimed to enhance the vehicle's premium appeal. The interior remained largely unchanged, maintaining its luxurious feel with Nappa leather and polished metallic accents in the Signature trim. The 2022 model also introduced new seats, which significantly improved comfort and driving position. Despite these updates, the CX-5's interior space and cargo capacity remained similar to the previous year, offering adequate but not class-leading room.

Performance

2021 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine options, both paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine produced 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, available in both FWD and AWD configurations. The turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, available in higher trims, delivered a more spirited performance with 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. Fuel efficiency varied, with the non-turbo FWD model achieving 9.7 L/100 km in the city and 7.8 on the highway, while the turbo AWD model consumed 10.8 L/100 km in the city and 8.7 on the highway. The CX-5's sporty driving dynamics were complemented by a stiff suspension, which could be a drawback for those seeking a smoother ride.

In 2022, Mazda made AWD standard across all CX-5 models and revised the six-speed automatic transmission for improved responsiveness. The base engine remained the same, but the turbocharged engine saw a slight increase in power, offering 256 horsepower on premium fuel. The introduction of Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) allowed drivers to choose between Normal, Sport, and Off-Road modes, enhancing the driving experience. The 2022 model also benefited from increased structural rigidity and reworked suspension tuning, resulting in a quieter and smoother ride while maintaining the CX-5's sporty character.

Form and function

2021 Mazda CX-5

7/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5's interior design was functional and stylish, with a seating position and comfort level typical of its class. However, rear legroom was limited, especially for taller passengers. The cargo space was below average, offering 875 litres behind the second row and 1,687 litres with the seats folded. The infotainment controls were not the most intuitive, and the larger shifter took up valuable space in the centre console.

For 2022, Mazda addressed some of these issues by introducing new seats that provided better support and comfort. The driving position was improved, and the front passenger seat became height-adjustable in all but the base trim. The back seat remained snug, but heated outboard cushions and air vents added comfort. The control layout still posed challenges, as the infotainment system lacked a touchscreen and natural voice recognition. Cargo space was slightly reduced to 871 litres behind the rear seats and 1,680 litres with them folded, remaining competitive with entry-level luxury SUVs but not mainstream crossovers.

Technology

2021 Mazda CX-5

4/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

5/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 featured a 10.25-inch infotainment display, but its non-touchscreen interface and lack of modern design elements detracted from the overall experience. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, the system's reliance on centre console controls made it less user-friendly. The absence of quick tuning knobs further complicated the operation.

In 2022, the tech setup remained largely unchanged, with the same 10.25-inch display and control scheme. Mazda's decision to avoid touchscreens was based on reducing driver distraction, but it limited the system's usability. The lack of natural voice recognition was a notable drawback, requiring drivers to rely on smartphone integration for intuitive assistance. The optional Bose sound system provided decent audio quality, and Mazda Connected Services offered additional connectivity features.

Safety

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning. Optional upgrades included a head-up display and a surround-view camera system. The model earned top safety ratings, receiving a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA.

In 2022, Mazda continued to prioritize safety with the i-Activsense package, which included advanced driver assistance systems. Higher trims added features like adaptive headlights and a driver monitoring system. The Signature trim offered Traffic Jam Assist for enhanced convenience in congested traffic. The 2022 CX-5 maintained its Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, reinforcing its reputation as a safe and reliable choice.
