2020 Ford Expedition Reviews Summary

Equipped with three rows of legitimately comfortable seating for as many as eight passengers, able to hold as much as 2,962 litres of cargo, capable of towing up more than 4,000 kilograms (9,000 pounds) of trailer, and supplying a minimum of 24.6 centimetres of ground clearance, I can’t think of a better all-around SUV than the 2020 Ford Expedition. But all of this capability doesn’t come cheap. Prices start at $62,500 for an Expedition XLT, and an Expedition King Ranch like our test vehicle tallies up to $80,750, not including a $1,950 destination charge.

Look and feel

2020 Ford Expedition

8/10

2021 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2020 Ford Expedition, last redesigned in 2018, presented a clean and somewhat understated style for a full-size SUV. While some might have found its design a bit dull, this simplicity often aged well, appealing to those planning to keep the vehicle for many years. The King Ranch edition stood out with its 22-inch aluminum wheels, mesh grille insert, LED headlights, and unique grey-painted lower exterior trim. The Star White metallic paint added a touch of elegance, although the taillight shape and body-coloured C-pillar were points of contention. Inside, the King Ranch featured Del Rio leather in Mesa over Ebony, adorned with King Ranch logos, though the presence of hard plastics, especially in lower trims, was a drawback for a vehicle in this price range.

In contrast, the 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid aimed to redefine minivan aesthetics with a more SUV-like appearance. Its wide grille and sleek LED headlamp arrays contributed to a bold stance, while the redesigned sliding side doors added a sculpted look. The Sienna's fit and finish were of high quality, typical of Toyota. Inside, the emphasis on width and horizontal lines created a spacious feel, with a higher seating position than a sedan. The dashboard was simple and uncluttered, and the centre console offered practical storage solutions. The second and third-row seats provided comfort for adults, with the second row offering flexible configurations for maximum utility.

Performance

2020 Ford Expedition

9/10

2021 Toyota Sienna

8/10

The 2020 Ford Expedition was powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, delivering 375 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 470 pound-feet of torque at 2,250 rpm. This engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, provided robust performance, with the SUV's 2,551-kilogram weight accelerating with enthusiasm. The Expedition's 4WD system was standard in Canada, offering a towing capacity of up to 4,173 kilograms. Its independent rear suspension improved ride quality and interior space, though the oversized wheels sometimes affected ride comfort. Fuel consumption was rated at 14.1 L/100 km city, 10.6 highway, and 12.5 combined.

The 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid featured a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine combined with two electric motors, producing 243 horsepower. The Sienna offered both FWD and AWD options, with the latter using a separate electric motor for the rear wheels. Its CVT provided smooth power delivery, though it lacked the punch of traditional transmissions. The Sienna's handling was improved with new suspension systems, offering a comfortable ride. Fuel efficiency was a highlight, with FWD models rated at 6.6 L/100 km city, 6.5 highway, and 6.5 combined, while AWD models achieved 6.8 city, 6.6 highway, and 6.7 combined.

The 2020 Ford Expedition excelled in towing, cargo, and passenger capacity. Its power running boards facilitated easy entry, and the interior offered ample storage, with heated and ventilated front seats in the King Ranch edition. The second-row captain’s chairs provided first-class comfort, and the third-row seat was genuinely comfortable for adults. Cargo space was 546 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,962 litres with the second and third rows folded.

The 2021 Toyota Sienna prioritized convenience, with a standard third-row 60/40-split bench that stored easily. The second row slid up to 63.5 centimetres, enhancing access and flexibility. The cabin featured 16 cupholders and ample storage. Cargo capacity was 949 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,860 litres with the second and third rows folded. The Sienna could tow up to 1,587 kilograms, and its hybrid battery was cleverly integrated to preserve cargo space.

The 2020 Ford Expedition featured an 8-inch Sync 3 infotainment system, which, while functional, felt outdated compared to newer systems. It included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and FordPass Connect with a WiFi hotspot. A premium Bang & Olufsen sound system and rear-seat entertainment were available, along with Pro Trailer Backup Assist for towing.

The 2021 Toyota Sienna offered a nine-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and multiple USB ports. Higher trims included a JBL audio system, rear-seat entertainment with an 11.6-inch display, and a digital rearview mirror. The Sienna also featured a 1500-watt inverter and Qi-compatible charging on select models.
