What should I look for when buying a used Mazda MAZDA3?
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: i-Activsense with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, a driver condition monitor, blind-spot monitors, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, plus a wireless charging pad.
- Fuel efficiency: The Mazda3 sedan with the base engine is the most efficient version at 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined (8.8 city, 6.6 highway). Adding AWD increases the combined rating to 8.1 L/100 km, while opting for the Turbo engine bumps the figure to 8.8 L/100 km combined. Numbers for the Mazda3 Sport are 0.1 to 0.2 L/100 km higher, while the base engine with the available manual averages 8.3 L/100 km combined.
Which Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2026 Mazda MAZDA3 offers these trims:
- GX: The entry trim uses the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, six-speed automatic, and front-wheel drive, making it the starting point for the range.
- GS: This trim adds the option of all-wheel drive, making it a smart pick if you want extra traction and more sure-footed handling.
- GT: The GT brings the Turbo engine option, plus available all-wheel drive, and adds adaptive headlights, a head-up display, lane centring, a surround-view camera system, and reverse automatic braking. It is the best-value choice if you want the richest feature set.
- GT Turbo: This version pairs the GT trim with the Turbo engine for the strongest performance in the lineup.
What Mazda MAZDA3 do most buyers choose?
The Mazda MAZDA3 years with the most listings are 2018, 2024, and 2017.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 254 | 33.1% |
| 2024 | 241 | 32% |
| 2017 | 241 | 34.4% |
| 2019 | 238 | 34% |
| 2015 | 217 | 29% |
| 2016 | 212 | 30.2% |
Higher-volume model years usually give you more choice in trims, colours, and equipment combinations, which makes it easier to find the right balance of price and features. They also tend to be the years shoppers cross-shop most often, so you can compare more listings before deciding.
What is the Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | $11,462 CAD | −12.37% |
| 2014 | $9,309 CAD | −11.94% |
| 2021 | $21,398 CAD | −10.09% |
| 2022 | $22,620 CAD | −9.54% |
| 2023 | $25,252 CAD | −8.87% |
| 2019 | $17,997 CAD | −7.28% |
| 2018 | $15,234 CAD | −7.22% |
| 2024 | $26,801 CAD | −6.82% |

| 2017 | $13,824 CAD | −2.91% |
| 2025 | $28,125 CAD | −2.16% |
Most Mazda MAZDA3 model years are down year over year, which is good news if you are shopping used and want more value for your money. The largest drops are concentrated in older and mid-cycle years, while newer examples are also easing lower but by smaller amounts. That pattern gives you a wider spread of price points to choose from across the lineup.
The 2025, 2017, and 2020 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.
Is the Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

- 2025: 9/10
- 2024: 9/10
- 2023: 8/10
- 2022: 10/10
- 2021: 10/10

For the safest used buy, the 2021 and 2022 models both post the highest confirmed score of 10/10.
Should I buy a used Mazda MAZDA3 now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −2.16% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −6.82%.
- Deal availability: The 2024 model has 32% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2018 model has the most listings at a current average price of $15,234 CAD. The Mazda MAZDA3 offers a stylish, driver-focused character that makes even everyday commuting feel more rewarding.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The standard engine on all three trims in Canada—GX, GS, and GT—is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the Turbo engine increases output to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded fuel and 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium.
- Tech: Higher-trimmed models get a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operate wirelessly in those higher trims and come with a wireless charging pad, too.
- Safety: The top GT model adds adaptive headlights, a head-up display, lane centring, a surround-view camera system, and reverse automatic braking.
- Starting price: The 2026 Mazda3 sedan has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $28,346 CAD for the base GX trim.
If you're buying used today, the 2018 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Exceptional driving experience. The most balanced, precision crafted steering wheel system of any cars I have ever owned (25 of them). Drives better than most acclaimed German machines out there.Mazda cars are very enjoyable to drive, yet these models are ones of the most underrated and undervalued vehicles yet. Amazing Mazda vehicles. They're excellent values, but folks have to give Mazda cars chances. Drive one. The issues I have with the current models are: 1). There's no 6 Speed Manual with the 2.5 Turbo AWD Premium Plus trim models. 2). Please, bring CD ( Compact Disc) entertainment back in all Mazdas. 3). Add colors to the interior design. It's too bland, monotonous, monochromatic, and boring. The only comparisons out there to the superb driving of Mazda vehicles are Nissan Altima SR, Audi S3 and BMW M340.

Reviewed a 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 on Sep 19, 2025
The Mazda 3 really shines compared to other compact cars because it feels so much more fun and engaging to drive, with sharp handling, responsive steering, and even the option for all-wheel drive or a turbo engine if you want more power. Inside, it feels more like a luxury car than an economy sedan, thanks to its quiet cabin, high-quality materials, and sleek design. On top of that, it’s packed with modern safety features and earns strong crash-test ratings, which adds a lot of peace of mind. The trade-offs are that the back seat and trunk aren’t the most spacious, the ride can feel a little firm on rough roads, and the higher trims can get pricey. When you compare it to other cars, the Mazda 3 is definitely more stylish and fun than the Toyota Corolla, though the Corolla has hybrids and a long reputation for reliability; it feels more upscale than the Honda Civic, though the Civic offers more space and resale value; and it’s nicer to drive than the Hyundai Elantra, even if the Elantra is usually cheaper at the entry level. Overall, the Mazda 3 is a great choice if you care about style, quality, and the joy of driving, rather than just getting the most space or the lowest price.

Mazdas are generally good value. Maybe not as refined as some of the Honda/Toyota models but just as reliable and generally cheaper.

CarGurus recommends the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3

Summary
With 240 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,973 CAD, 33.3% of 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out because it moves the compact car formula closer to premium territory without losing its driver-focused character. Mazda describes the post-2019 car as a genuine alternative to premium-brand rivals, and the hatchback’s sleeker, coupe-like rear styling gives it a more distinctive look. Inside, it pairs a simple, sporty layout with supportive front seats and high-quality materials, which helps explain why it feels more upscale than many mainstream competitors.
It is also notable for how much equipment Mazda packed into the range. All models include alloy wheels, cruise control, LED headlights, and advanced safety features, while most versions add blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone climate control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher-spec models go further with a Bose premium audio system and electric driver’s seat adjustment. The 2021 Mazda3 model year introduced the Mazda3 2.5 Turbo, with 250 horsepower, or 227 with regular fuel, and 320 lb-ft of torque, or 310 with regular fuel, plus all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. Mazda also says the 2.0-litre engine was dropped for 2024.
For buyers, the appeal is the blend of style, technology, and driving enjoyment. The post-2019 Mazda3 is described as holding up well so far, with no major reliability concerns, and it was second only to the Honda Civic in the compact category of the 2024 Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey reliability study of three-year-old cars and SUVs. The main trade-off is that some owners have reported air conditioning issues, and the user feedback also points to the absence of automatic seat adjustments and seat warmers as a drawback.
