Are Jeep Cherokee models reliable?

Owners and experts consistently highlight the Cherokee’s comfort, rugged character, and useful everyday versatility. Across the lineup, it also earns praise for its spacious interior and strong value.

• Owners rate the Jeep Cherokee between 3.86 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.

For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is highest on older examples with known transmission concerns, so condition and maintenance history matter a great deal.

What should I look for when buying a used Jeep Cherokee?

Key things to evaluate:

• Safety package: Active Driving Assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality.
• Infotainment: A 12.3-inch touchscreen with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel economy of 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres combined (6.1 city, 6.7 highway).

Which Jeep Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee offers these trims:

• Base model: Standard all-wheel drive, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and the hybrid powertrain make this the best-value trim for shoppers who want the Cherokee’s core setup.
• Laredo: Adds more equipment while keeping the same hybrid powertrain and AWD foundation, making it a sensible step up if you want more content without moving to the top of the range.
• Limited: Adds leatherette seats, wireless device charging, and more convenience features, making it a strong choice if you want a more upscale cabin.
• Overland: Adds 20-inch wheels, traffic sign recognition, and the most premium equipment in the lineup for buyers who want the most fully featured Cherokee.

What Jeep Cherokee do most buyers choose?

The Jeep Cherokee years with the most listings are 2020, 2019, and 2018.

These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they sit in a sweet spot of price, equipment, and availability. They also give you more choice across trims and condition levels, which makes it easier to find a Cherokee that fits your budget.

What is the Jeep Cherokee's resale value?

Most Cherokee model years are showing double-digit year-over-year price drops, which is good news if you’re shopping used. The biggest declines are concentrated in the more recent and mid-cycle years, while a few older examples are falling more slowly.

The 2018, 2015, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Is the Jeep Cherokee safe?

• 2026: 7/10

Jeep offers standard driver assistance features including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, and Active Driving Assist.

For the safest used buy, the 2026 model posts the highest confirmed score of 7/10.

Should I buy a used Jeep Cherokee now or wait for the next model?

Buy now if:

• Price trend: The 2023 model is at −15.5% versus a year ago, and the 2022 model is at −17.71%.
• Deal availability: The 2022 model has 29.8% good and great deals.
• Sweet-spot year: The 2020 model has the most listings at a current average price of $21,407 CAD. The Jeep Cherokee offers a distinctive Jeep badge and a comfortable, versatile cabin that gives it a strong everyday personality.

Consider waiting if:

• Powertrain/efficiency: The new Cherokee’s specs don’t seem very Jeep-like at first. The only powertrain available at launch consists of a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine connected to a two-motor hybrid system with a planetary gearset taking the place of a conventional transmission, similar to what Subaru and Toyota use. It’s good for 210 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque.
• Tech: The 2026 Cherokee comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, still running the same Uconnect 5 infotainment system as the outgoing Cherokee from the 2023 model year. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain standard.
• Safety: Jeep offers similar standard driver assistance features to other mainstream brands, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Active Driving Assist, which pairs automated lane centring with adaptive cruise control for highway driving, is also standard.
• Starting price: Pricing starts at $42,390 CAD for the base model.

If you're buying used today, the 2020 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.
