Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 a good car?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earns an 8.3/10 from our experts, and it remains a refined three-row midsize SUV for you if you want style, substance, and a premium feel. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The XC90’s updated styling, materials, and feature offerings help it feel current, while its user-friendly technology and strong safety reputation support its family-SUV appeal. Trade-offs include the lack of semi-autonomous driving and the fact that the top-tier sound system still costs extra even on the top trim.

With 34.7% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market offers a decent number of attractive opportunities.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 reliable?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is presented as a well-sorted, cautious luxury SUV with standard AWD, a smooth eight-speed automatic, and mechanical updates aimed at improving ride comfort and stability. Its standard advanced driver-assistance systems are described as operating smoothly, without erroneous interference during testing.

The XC90’s plug-in hybrid version needs regular charging to keep its fuel-saving benefits working as intended, while the mild-hybrid version is the more hassle-free choice if you want to avoid charger dependence. If you plan to keep one long term, the main ownership risk is that the more complex plug-in hybrid setup can add inconvenience and potential cost compared with the simpler mild-hybrid model.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Core trim is the entry point, while Plus and Ultra packages add equipment and a more upscale feel. The base trim uses quilted Nordico, and the Ultra package brings perforated Nappa leather or herringbone weave textile, so you should check whether the features you want are included before you buy.
• Powertrain: You can choose between the B6 mild hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid. The B6 is the simpler, more user-friendly option, while the T8 adds an electric motor and an 18.8-kWh battery pack, plus up to 53 kilometres of pure electric range when fully charged.
• Safety package: The standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. The XC90 does not offer a hands-free highway-driving system.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen is larger, sharper, and runs a new user interface with a fewer-taps approach. Apple CarPlay is standard and works wirelessly or via USB-C cable, and the Ultra package adds a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The T8 plug-in hybrid offers a Natural Resources Canada-rated low of 3.8 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres when you keep it charged.

Which 2025 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultra.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the value starting point if you want the XC90’s core strengths without stretching to the pricier packages. It gives you the standard safety and technology foundation, and it’s the trim to focus on if you want the most accessible entry into the lineup.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim if you want a more premium experience without going all the way to the top. It adds meaningful equipment and can be a smart middle ground for shoppers who care about comfort and convenience.
• Ultra: Choose this if you want the most upscale XC90 experience, including the richest cabin materials and the most advanced available features. It suits you best if you’re prioritising luxury and are willing to pay extra for it.

The standard safety package includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection.

Should I buy a 2025 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.69% compared with last year.
• The refreshed styling, materials, and feature updates make this year feel more current.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $55,804 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $69,473 CAD average.
• It stands out for timeless styling and strong safety ratings.

The bottom line: If you want the most up-to-date XC90 with the strongest mix of styling, technology, and safety, the 2025 model is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2024 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the XC90’s core appeal.
