Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 a good car?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earns an 8.33/10 expert rating.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It builds on a well-regarded formula with updated styling, materials, feature offerings, and mechanical tweaks aimed at improving ride comfort and handling. It remains a three-row midsize SUV with a premium feel, user-friendly technology, and a strong safety image. The main trade-offs are that semi-autonomous driving is not available, and the top-tier sound system still costs extra even on the top trim.

With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to find value if you shop carefully.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 reliable?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is presented as a refined, functional SUV with a strong safety reputation and smooth operation from its standard advanced driver-assistance systems. The expert drive notes that the systems worked as expected and did not interfere erroneously during testing.

Its powertrain choices also support confidence in day-to-day use: the B6 mild hybrid is the more user-friendly, hassle-free option, while the T8 plug-in hybrid needs regular charging to deliver its fuel-saving benefit. The standard suspension update with Frequency Selective Damping is also described as improving ride comfort and stability.

If you want lower ownership complexity, the mild-hybrid setup is the safer long-term bet for used buyers.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim gets quilted Nordico upholstery, while the Plus package adds more equipment and the Ultra package brings more premium materials such as perforated Nappa leather or herringbone weave textile. The Ultra package also adds the head-up display, and the top-tier sound system still costs extra even on the top trim.
• Powertrain: You can choose between the B6 mild hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid. The B6 is the simpler gas-only option with standard AWD and an eight-speed automatic, while the T8 adds an electric motor and an 18.8-kWh battery pack for more output and up to 53 kilometres of pure electric range.
• Safety package: The standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. Semi-autonomous highway driving is not available.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen is larger, sharper, and uses a new user interface with a fixed menu bar and contextual bar. Apple CarPlay is standard and works wirelessly or via USB-C cable, and Google Built-In is included.
• Fuel efficiency: The T8 plug-in hybrid offers a Natural Resources Canada-rated low of 3.8 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres when charged regularly.

Which 2025 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, Ultra.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point and the best fit if you want the XC90’s core strengths without stretching for extras. It gives you the standard safety and technology foundation, plus the mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid choice.
• Plus: This is the value-focused upgrade if you want a better-equipped cabin without jumping all the way to the top. It adds meaningful comfort and tech improvements while staying below Ultra pricing.
• Ultra: This is the pick if you want the most premium XC90 experience, including the richer interior materials, head-up display, and access to the upgraded audio options.

The standard advanced driver-assistance suite is included, while some higher-end features and audio upgrades remain package-dependent.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 202 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.54% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $70,201 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $70,475 CAD sits slightly below last year's $83,445 CAD.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has softened meaningfully in the used market, which can help you buy in at a more favourable point. If you plan to sell later, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and whether the vehicle has the more desirable equipment. The plug-in hybrid and higher trims may hold appeal for some shoppers, but the broader market is currently pricing this model below where it was a year ago.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), that non-profit’s highest honour.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, blind-spot information system, intersection auto brake, and large animal detection. Those systems are described as working smoothly and without erroneous intervention during testing.

One important caveat is that the XC90 does not offer a hands-free highway-driving system, which some rivals do provide.

Should I buy a 2025 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.54% compared with last year.
• It adds updated styling, materials, feature offerings, and ride-and-handling improvements.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $55,977 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $70,475 CAD average.
• It is still appealing for its timeless styling and plug-in hybrid availability.

The bottom line: Choose the 2025 if you want the fresher version with the stronger feature set and improved refinement. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2024 remains a sensible alternative, especially if you value the XC90’s design and comfort more than the latest refresh.
