Why it stands out
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner arrives as a long-awaited redesign, and it keeps the formula that has made the nameplate appealing for so long while adding more capability, power, comfort, and technology. It is also more efficient thanks to a new hybrid option, and it is described as more composed on pavement without losing its identity as a solid all-terrain vehicle. For buyers who want a rugged SUV that can extend adventures further, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
It also stands out for its stylish design and excellent off-road abilities, which remain central to the 2025 Toyota 4Runner’s character. The trade-off is that rear-seat space is limited, so it is not the most accommodating choice for passengers in back. Even so, its blend of updated efficiency, added refinement, and proven trail-ready capability makes it distinctive in a way that should resonate with shoppers looking for a durable, adventure-focused SUV.

Reviewed a 2025 Toyota SR5 4WD on Apr 5, 2025
In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2025 Toyota 4Runner earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
It arrives as a long-awaited redesign that adds more capability, power, comfort, and technology, while staying true to its rugged, adventure-focused identity. It is also more efficient thanks to a new hybrid option and more composed on pavement without losing its solid all-terrain character.
The main trade-offs are limited rear-seat space and a driving experience that still reflects its truck-based roots more than a conventional midsize SUV.
With 21.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is a decent amount of market value to be found if you shop carefully.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is presented as a durable, adventure-focused SUV with a reputation for reliability behind the nameplate. The expert assessment also points to Toyota’s reputation for reliability as part of the model’s appeal, alongside its improved refinement and capability.
Its standard powertrain is described as more powerful than the previous-generation V6, and the hybrid adds stronger low-speed usable power without sacrificing the 4Runner’s core purpose. The new eight-speed automatic transmission is also part of the update, and the cabin is said to be much quieter on the inside, which should help reduce fatigue on longer drives.
Toyota’s maintenance perk language is not included in the provided data.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing the right trim and powertrain for your needs, since capability and efficiency vary meaningfully across the lineup.
What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Toyota 4Runner?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 4Runner’s styling is more industrial and broad-shouldered, and the cabin uses plenty of hard plastic for durability. Base trims are more functional than plush, so you should check whether the equipment level matches your expectations for comfort and refinement.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 317 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, or the Hybrid i-Force Max with 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. The hybrid is the stronger choice for low-speed power and off-road use, while the standard engine is still capable and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, with frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, Proactive Driving Assist, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert in Canada. Proactive Driving Assist can feel intrusive, though you can disable it.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard, and a 14-inch screen is available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wireless, a charging pad is offered, and a digital instrument panel is included with all Hybrid variants and most extra-cost packages on gas models.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard four-cylinder is estimated at 12.4 L/100 km city, 9.6 highway, and 11.2 combined. The hybrid is estimated at 10.3 L/100 km city, 9.5 highway, and 9.9 combined.
Which 2025 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and the hybrid versions of Limited and Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the 4Runner’s new design, standard four-cylinder power, and core capability without paying for extra equipment. It is the value-focused starting point, but you should expect a more basic experience than the higher trims.
- Limited: This trim is the better pick if you want more comfort and the available full-time 4WD mentioned in the expert data. It suits you if you want a more road-friendly 4Runner with added convenience.
- Platinum: Choose this if you want a more upscale version of the 4Runner with the same available full-time 4WD mention and a stronger emphasis on comfort and technology. It is the premium-leaning choice in the gas lineup.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds serious off-road capability without jumping all the way to the most expensive adventure models. It is a strong fit if you want trail ability first, but still want a usable daily driver.
- TRD Pro: Pick this if you want the most capable adventure-focused 4Runner in the lineup. It is described as one of the most impressive off-road models and is best for buyers who prioritise rough-terrain performance.
- Trailhunter: This is the other top adventure choice, and it is aimed at buyers who want a highly equipped off-road setup with a more specialised character. The snorkel adds wind noise, so it is best if trail hardware matters more than quiet highway cruising.
- Limited Hybrid: This is for you if you want the Limited’s comfort focus plus the hybrid’s stronger low-speed power and better efficiency. It is the smarter pick if you want a more balanced premium trim.
- Platinum Hybrid: Choose this if you want the most upscale hybrid version and are willing to pay for it. It combines the hybrid powertrain with the Platinum’s comfort-oriented positioning.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the lineup, and the blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is standard in Canada.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Toyota 4Runner?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some confidence if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 21.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 94 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.90% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $69,716 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $70,826 CAD sits slightly below last year's $72,945 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more selectively today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and how well the vehicle is equipped relative to the rest of the market.
Because the 4Runner has strong owner satisfaction and a reputation for durability, demand should remain healthy for well-kept examples. That should help support resale value over time, especially for desirable trims and cleaner listings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner does not yet have crash test results from either NHTSA or IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
All 4Runner models come standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced safety features that include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, and automatic high beams. It also includes Proactive Driving Assist, which can slow the vehicle when approaching curves, though some drivers may find it intrusive. In Canada, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard.
The main caveat is that official crash testing has not yet been published for this model year.
Should I buy a 2025 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2025 if:
- 21.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a long-awaited redesign with more capability, power, comfort, and technology.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $55,854 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $70,826 CAD average.
- It remains a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with strong reliability and durability.
The bottom line: If you want the newest 4Runner with better efficiency, more refinement, and a modernised package, the 2025 is the better long-term choice. If your priority is lower purchase price and you still want the 4Runner’s core rugged character, the 2024 is the more budget-friendly path.
