Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and durability. It is still an accomplished choice for buyers who value all-terrain capability and plenty of cargo space, and owner feedback also points to its spaciousness, power, and appealing looks. For shoppers who want a vehicle that feels built for tougher use rather than the latest trends, that core character is a major part of its appeal.
At the same time, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner shows its age in ways that matter to many buyers. It trails newer rivals in technology, safety features, fuel efficiency, and power, and the current model’s ageing platform is described as being in desperate need of a full redesign. The driving experience is also a weak point, with poor handling, sluggish performance, and poor fuel economy among its drawbacks. Even so, some owners appreciated the improved ride quality, along with features such as heated seats and blind spot monitoring, though others noted that it could be loud during daily commutes.

The features are great. However, I have it a 4 because the color is off!!! If you look at the photo it is obviously Red. The description says it is Terra. I called the dealership and it is defininetly not red but a brown color, terra cotta.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Generally — the 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 4.5/10 expert rating, so it lands as a niche choice rather than a broad-appeal one. The standout strength is Form and function at 6/10.
Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and appealing looks, and they also point to the improved ride quality and useful features like heated seats and blind spot monitoring. The 4Runner’s rugged, off-road-focused character fits buyers who value all-terrain capability and cargo space more than the latest trends.
The trade-offs are clear: it trails newer rivals in technology, safety features, fuel efficiency, and power, and the driving experience is held back by poor handling and sluggish performance. With 20.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some leverage if you’re willing to accept those compromises.
Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free reputation, with buyers highlighting the 4Runner’s durability and the confidence that comes from a vehicle built for long-term use. The expert assessment reinforces that dependable character by describing it as a vehicle with a strong reputation for reliability and durability.
For ownership, that usually means the bigger risk is not whether it can last, but whether its older design and dated efficiency will still suit your needs over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The range-topping TRD Pro adds underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a beefy tubular roof rack, while the Limited also gets a surround-view camera system. Base trims are much more old-school inside, with an analog instrument panel and a comparatively tiny eight-inch infotainment touchscreen.
- Powertrain: Every 2024 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. The TRD Pro comes standard with 4WD and a two-speed transfer case.
- Safety package: Toyota’s driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and 4Runner Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: You get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the eight-inch touchscreen is small and can be challenging to use while driving. The system does not include some of the off-road-specific apps and gauges found in some rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates it at 14.8 L/100 km in the city, 12.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.8 L/100 km combined.
Which 2024 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: TRD Pro, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Limited: This is the better fit if you want the more comfort- and convenience-oriented version, especially because it adds the surround-view camera system. It makes the most sense for buyers who want the 4Runner’s rugged character without leaning as hard into the off-road hardware.
- TRD Pro: This is the one to choose if you want the most serious trail-ready setup, with underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, a tubular roof rack, and standard 4WD with a two-speed transfer case. It is the clear pick for buyers who plan to use the 4Runner for tougher terrain.
The Limited and TRD Pro both include the surround-view camera system, so that safety and visibility upgrade is not exclusive to the top off-road trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 20.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 121 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.91% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $55,631 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $55,685 CAD sits slightly below last year's $63,938 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means a future seller may face a more competitive resale environment if the market keeps drifting downward. The 4Runner’s age and dated technology may continue to weigh on pricing unless demand for its rugged reputation stays strong.
Even so, vehicles with a loyal following and clear purpose often hold attention better than more generic SUVs. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings in overall and frontal crash protection, five-star ratings in side impacts, and three-star ratings in rollover evaluations from NHTSA. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a Good result for the original moderate frontal overlap crash test and side protection tests, but the newer small overlap frontal test includes Marginal and Poor results.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota’s standard driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system.
The main caveat is that the safety results are mixed, especially in the newer small overlap frontal test, so you should not assume this SUV matches the strongest performers in the class.
Should I buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 20.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.91% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It remains a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with strong reliability and durability.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $55,319 CAD, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $55,685 CAD average.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
Consider the 2025 if:
- At $71,797 CAD, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $55,685 CAD average.
- It brings a full redesign with more capability, power, comfort, and technology.
The bottom line: If you want the current-generation 4Runner and can live with its dated feel, the 2024 is the better buy when you find a well-priced example. If price matters most, the 2023 is the value play; if you want a major step forward, it makes more sense to wait for the redesigned 2025.
