Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4/5 from users and an 8.17/10 expert rating, which points to a strong overall case for shoppers who value polish over plain utility. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is positioned as a compact car that feels more upscale than many rivals, with luxury-level comfort, refined performance, and an interior that punches above its class. It also brings hatchback versatility, so you can use it for everyday errands and cargo-hauling tasks that might otherwise push you toward a small SUV.

The trade-offs are clear: the infotainment system is frustrating to use, and rear visibility is limited by the large C-pillar. Even so, if you want a small car that feels polished and engaging rather than basic, this model year fits that brief well.

30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is a meaningful share of attractive offers in the market.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is described as a car that delivers refined performance and cabin quality without asking you to pay luxury-car money. Its driving character is a major part of the appeal, with sharp handling and a composed ride that suggest a well-sorted package for daily use.

The performance notes also point to a strong, engaging powertrain lineup, including a turbocharged engine that delivers plenty of torque and a rewarding driving experience. On the cost side, the model is presented as a premium-feeling compact car rather than a bargain-basement one, which can be a good sign if you value a more substantial ownership experience.

If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that the same technology and visibility drawbacks that affect day-to-day use can still shape your ownership satisfaction.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GX includes 16-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GS adds dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, while the Luxury package brings synthetic leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a moonroof. The GT adds 18-inch alloy wheels, paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel. Manual transmission availability varies by trim and body style, and AWD is available on some versions.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The GS adds forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The GT adds adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
• Infotainment: The standard display is 8.8 inches, it is not a touchscreen, and it is controlled by a rotary dial. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and higher trims can add navigation and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo system.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.0-litre engine is rated from 7.6 to 7.8 L/100 km combined, the non-turbo 2.5-litre from 7.6 to 8.1 L/100 km combined, and the turbo hatchback at 8.9 L/100 km combined.

Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 4 trim levels: GX, GS, GT, and GT Turbo.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point, and it already gives you heated front seats, keyless entry, pushbutton start, and the 8.8-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Mazda3 experience.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds dual-zone climate control and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, while also unlocking more safety equipment. If you want the sweet spot between price and features, start here.
• GT: This is the trim to choose if you want a more premium feel, with genuine leather upholstery, a head-up display, navigation, paddle shifters, and 18-inch wheels. It suits you if you want the Mazda3 to feel fully loaded without going to the turbo model.
• GT Turbo: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the more powerful turbocharged engine and standard AWD. Pick it if you care most about stronger acceleration and the most forceful driving experience.

The GS is the trim that best balances equipment and value, while the GT Turbo is the one to target if performance matters most.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.

• Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 172 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.87% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,139 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $25,252 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,710 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you better entry pricing now, but it also means future sellers may face a softer resale environment than owners saw a year ago. If you buy at the right price, you can reduce the risk of taking a bigger hit later. The model’s premium feel and strong driving appeal should still help it stay desirable with used shoppers.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings in its front crash tests and rollover test from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The GS adds forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The GT adds adaptive headlights, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.

The main caveat is the hatchback’s massive C-pillar, which creates a serious blind spot. The infotainment layout can also be distracting because it is awkward to use while driving.

Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

Choose the 2023 if:

• 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.87% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It combines upscale feel, sharp handling, and hatchback versatility.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,620 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,252 CAD average.
• It offers stylish design, enjoyable driving manners, and strong safety ratings.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $26,801 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,252 CAD average.
• It adds broad configuration flexibility with sedan, hatchback, FWD, AWD, and multiple engine choices.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price movement, satisfaction, and premium character, the 2023 is the strongest all-round pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value path; if you want more configuration flexibility, the 2024 is worth a look.
