How much does the 2023 Land Rover Defender cost?

Prices have softened 20.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 148 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is a mixed but appealing choice if you value character, capability, and versatility over outright polish, and your user rating is 3/5 while our experts score it 7.2/10.

The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

It stands out as a modern recreation of the original Land Rover, with classic style, plenty of customisation, and a wide range of powertrain and body choices. That makes it especially appealing if you want an SUV with real personality and a strong sense of purpose, and the extended-length variant adds practicality without abandoning the tough image.

The trade-offs are clear: the cabin can feel too utilitarian, body roll is a drawback, and it is described as poor value for money. Even so, the Defender’s distinctive design and versatility help explain why it still has appeal, and 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is built around ruggedness and durability, with excellent build quality and fit, plus a solid structure in Euro NCAP testing.

Its powertrains are described as capable, and the six-cylinder mild-hybrid setup is said to turn off and restart seamlessly without shuddering. The Defender also uses an electric supercharger for quicker low-speed response, which supports smooth everyday drivability.

On the ownership side, the Defender’s utilitarian cabin materials are chosen to resist wear and moisture, which should help it hold up well in hard use. For used buyers, the bigger long-term risk is paying luxury-SUV money for a vehicle that can feel less refined than its price suggests.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Defender’s appeal changes a lot by trim and body style, from the more basic, function-first cabin to versions with larger screens, air suspension, and more upscale equipment. Base trims are lighter on luxury, so make sure the feature set matches what you expect.
• Powertrain: The turbocharged four-cylinder is the least compelling choice if you do much highway driving, while the six-cylinder mild-hybrid setup adds smoother response and better all-round performance. The V8 brings the strongest acceleration, but it also comes with much worse fuel consumption.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. A 360-degree camera system, head-up display, and trailer-reversing steering are available, but self-steering highway assist is not offered.
• Infotainment: You get Pivi Pro with a standard 10-inch touchscreen, while an optional 11.4-inch screen is larger and easier to read. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with connected apps and a voice assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder is rated at 14.2 L/100 km in city driving, 11.7 on the highway, and 13.0 combined, while the six-cylinder returns 12.9/10.4/11.8. The V8 is rated at 16.4/12.7/14.7.

Which 2023 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is offered in 4 trim levels: 110 S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, X.

Here's the short version:

• 110 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Defender’s core character with heated 12-way power seats, leather, and a Meridian sound system. It makes sense if you want the nameplate and the basics without chasing expensive extras.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds fog lights, half-circle daytime running lights, surround sound, auto-dimming exterior mirror, auto high beams, and cooled front seats. If you want a more complete daily-driver setup, this is the one to target.
• X-Dynamic SE: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a few extra interior touches, including silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec trim details. It is more about style and presentation than a major capability jump.
• X: This is the most feature-rich trim in the lineup, with air suspension, a locking rear differential, upgraded Terrain Response 2, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display. It suits you best if you want the most advanced equipment and are willing to pay for it.

The X trim adds the most safety- and off-road-oriented equipment, while the lower trims keep the Defender’s core appeal more affordable.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

• Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 148 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.95% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $60,947 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $60,947 CAD sits slightly below last year's $77,101 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favour, which can make the Defender easier to shop now than it was a year ago. For a future seller, it also means you may face more pressure to price competitively if you want to stand out. The current trend points to softer resale conditions, especially if your vehicle is priced above the market average.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender safe?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender earns five-star ratings in Euro NCAP crash testing, and it has not been rated by a U.S. government agency or insurance organisation.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Land Rover equips it with six airbags, which is fewer than you might expect in this class. Standard driver-assistance features include lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking, while a 360-degree camera system and trailer-reversing steering are available. A self-steering highway assist is not offered.

Should I buy a 2023 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.95% compared with last year.
• It adds the extended 130 body style, giving you more practicality without losing the Defender’s rugged identity.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $55,612 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $60,947 CAD average.
• It blends rugged capability with modern tech and offers two-door 90 and four-door 110 body styles.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $70,333 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $60,947 CAD average.
• It adds more features and broader V8 availability for buyers who want a richer equipment list.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the new 130 body style and a market that has softened meaningfully. If price matters most, the 2022 is the smarter value play, while the 2024 suits you if you want the newer feature set and can stretch your budget.
