How much does the 2023 Land Rover Defender cost?

There are 150 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender a good car?

It’s a mixed but appealing choice if you want a distinctive SUV with real capability and a premium edge. The user rating is 3/5, and the expert rating is 7.17/10.

The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

The Defender’s classic, rugged character, broad powertrain and body choices, and strong build quality help it stand apart from more conventional SUVs. It also balances toughness with comfort and luxury features, which makes it especially relevant if you want something that feels purposeful rather than generic.

The trade-offs are clear: the cabin can feel too utilitarian, body roll is a drawback, and it is poor value for money.

With 36.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to find a compelling example if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The Defender is built around a rugged identity, with excellent build quality and a design that prioritises durability and function.

Its off-road hardware and adaptable chassis are a major part of the appeal, and the powertrain lineup includes a mild-hybrid inline-six that runs smoothly with seamless stop-start operation. The eight-speed automatic is described as flawless, which is a good sign for everyday drivability.

The Defender also benefits from a practical maintenance note in the cost-effectiveness information: the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that its complexity and premium positioning can make repairs and upkeep more expensive than you might expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Defender 110 S gives you heated 12-way power seats with leather and a Meridian sound system, while the SE trims add fog lights, half-circle daytime running lights, surround sound, an auto-dimming driver’s mirror, auto high beams, and cooled front seats. The X-Dynamic SE adds silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec seat trim, while the X brings air suspension, a locking rear differential, an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display.
• Powertrain: The turbocharged four-cylinder is the least compelling choice unless you mainly drive locally. The mild-hybrid inline-six adds smoother response and stronger performance, while the supercharged V8 delivers the most urgency. The Defender’s off-road ability is a core strength, but on-road behaviour is hampered by body roll, slow steering, and noticeable drivetrain drag.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. A 360-degree camera system, a head-up display, and a digital instrument panel with full-screen maps are available, but self-steering highway assist is not offered.
• Infotainment: The standard 10-inch touchscreen runs Pivi Pro, and an optional 11.4-inch screen is available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant, and connected apps come standard.
• Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder 110 is rated at 14.2 L/100 km in the city, 11.7 on the highway, and 13.0 combined. The six-cylinder 110 is rated at 12.9/10.4/11.8 L/100 km, while the V8 returns 16.4/12.7/14.7 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is offered in 6 trim levels: 110 S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, X, V8, and V8 Carpathian Edition.

Here's the short version:

• 110 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Defender experience with heated 12-way power seats with leather and a Meridian sound system. It makes sense if you want the least expensive way into the lineup, but it is also the most basic.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful comfort and convenience upgrades such as fog lights, surround sound, cooled front seats, and auto high beams. If you want a more complete daily-driver package without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the one to focus on.
• X-Dynamic SE: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a few extra exterior and interior touches, including silver accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec seat trim. It is a good fit if style matters as much as equipment.
• X: This is the most capability-focused trim in the mainstream lineup, with air suspension, a locking rear differential, an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display. It suits you best if you want the most advanced hardware short of the V8 models.
• V8: This is the performance choice, pairing the strongest engine with the Defender’s most dramatic road presence. It is for you if acceleration matters more than value.
• V8 Carpathian Edition: This is the most exclusive and expensive version, with a blacked-out appearance and 22-inch wheels. It is best if you want the top-end look and are willing to pay for it.

The X trim also brings the most advanced safety-related hardware in this lineup, including the upgraded Terrain Response 2 system and camera-based rearview mirror display.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 150 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.36% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $62,115 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $62,169 CAD sits slightly below last year's $78,061 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means sellers may need to price more competitively to stand out. If you own one, condition, trim, and equipment level will matter a lot when it comes time to resell. Well-equipped examples should hold more appeal than basic versions, especially if they are priced near the lower end of the current range.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender earns five-star ratings in Euro NCAP crash testing and was praised for its solid structure.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. A 360-degree camera system is available, along with a digital instrument panel that can show full-screen maps and a head-up display. Automatic steering when reversing a trailer is also available.

One caveat is that Land Rover equips the Defender with six airbags, which is fewer than you might expect in this class.

Should I buy a 2023 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.36% compared with last year.
• It adds the extended 130 body style for more versatility.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $55,919 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $62,169 CAD average.
• It adds a new optional 11.4-inch touchscreen and expands the trim range.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $71,633 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $62,169 CAD average.
• It adds a host of new features and broadens V8 availability.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the Defender’s expanded body choice and a market that has softened meaningfully. If price is your top priority, the 2022 is the smarter value play; if you want the newest feature set and can spend more, the 2024 is the better upgrade path.
