How much does the 2023 Land Rover Defender cost?

Prices have softened 21.57% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 146 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender a good car?

It’s a mixed but appealing choice if you want a distinctive SUV that blends rugged character with added practicality, and it earns a 3/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

The Defender’s appeal comes from its classic, boxy design, extended-length body, and broad range of powertrain and body options. It also brings build quality, comfort, and luxury features that help it feel more premium than a purely utilitarian off-roader.

The trade-offs are clear: the cabin can feel too utilitarian, body roll is a drawback, and it is described as poor value for money. If you want a vehicle with real personality and useful versatility, it fits that brief well; if you want the most polished luxury SUV experience, you may want to look elsewhere.

With 35.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The Defender is built around ruggedness, and its solid structure and off-road focus support that image. Its performance character is also backed by permanent four-wheel drive and a Terrain Response 2 system that adapts the vehicle to different surfaces.

The turbocharged inline-six uses a 48-volt mild hybrid setup, with seamless stop-start operation and an electric supercharger for quicker low-speed response. The Defender also offers a turbocharged four-cylinder and a supercharged V8, but the base engine can feel strained at highway speeds.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Defender’s complexity and premium positioning can make repairs and upkeep more demanding than you might expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Defender 110 S is the most stripped-back version, while the SE trims add conveniences such as fog lights, half-circle daytime running lights, surround sound, an auto-dimming driver’s mirror, auto high beams, and cooled front seats. The X-Dynamic SE adds silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec seat trim, while the X brings air suspension, a locking rear differential, an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display.
• Powertrain: The Defender offers a turbocharged four-cylinder, a 48-volt mild-hybrid inline-six, and a supercharged V8. The four-cylinder is best suited to local driving, the six-cylinder adds smoother response and stronger performance, and the V8 delivers the most power.
• Safety package: The Defender includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking as standard. A 360-degree camera system, a digital instrument panel with full-screen maps, a head-up display, and automatic steering when reversing a trailer are available, while self-steering highway assist is not offered.
• Infotainment: You get Pivi Pro with either a standard 10-inch touchscreen or an optional 11.4-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant, and connected apps come standard, and the larger screen improves legibility.
• Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder is rated at 14.2 L/100 km in city driving, 11.7 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.0 L/100 km combined, while the six-cylinder is rated at 12.9/10.4/11.8 L/100 km. The V8 returns 16.4/12.7/14.7 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is offered in 4 trim levels: 110 S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, and X.

Here's the short version:

• 110 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Defender’s core look and capability with heated 12-way power seats, leather, and a Meridian sound system. It makes sense if you want the least expensive way into the lineup.
• SE: This trim adds a more complete everyday experience with fog lights, half-circle daytime running lights, surround sound, an auto-dimming driver’s mirror, auto high beams, and cooled front seats. It’s the best-value choice if you want more comfort and convenience without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• X-Dynamic SE: This version is mainly about appearance and a few extra touches, including silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec seat trim. Choose it if you want a more distinctive look.
• X: This is the most capability-focused trim in the group, with air suspension, a locking rear differential, an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display. It suits you best if you want the most advanced hardware.

The X trim also brings the most complete safety and off-road-oriented equipment in the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 146 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 21.57% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $61,389 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $61,399 CAD sits slightly below last year's $78,288 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers than sellers. If you own one and plan to sell later, you may need to be realistic about pricing unless demand strengthens.

For future resale, the Defender’s distinctive styling and broad appeal should help it hold interest. Even so, its current price trend shows that used values can move down quickly when supply and shopper expectations shift.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender earns five-star ratings from Euro NCAP and was praised for its solid structure.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Land Rover equips it with six airbags, which is fewer than you might expect for a vehicle in this class. Standard driver assistance includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking, while a 360-degree camera system, a digital instrument panel with full-screen maps, a head-up display, and trailer reversing assist are available.

One caveat is that self-steering highway assist is not offered, and the airbag count is relatively low.

Should I buy a 2023 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 21.57% compared with last year.
• It adds the extended 130 body style and keeps the Defender’s broad choice of powertrains and body configurations.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $56,099 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $61,399 CAD average.
• It offers rugged capability with modern tech and a more compact two-door option.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $70,651 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $61,399 CAD average.
• It adds more features and broadens V8 availability.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the extended-body Defender and a market that has softened meaningfully. If price matters most, the 2022 is the value play; if you want more features and can spend more, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
