Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is a mixed but appealing choice if you want a distinctive SUV that blends rugged character with practical usefulness. It earns a user rating of 3/5 and an expert rating of 7.2/10.

The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

It stands out for its classic design, broad body-style and powertrain choice, and its ability to balance toughness with a more premium feel. At the same time, the cabin can feel too utilitarian, body roll is a drawback, and it is described as poor value for money.

For shoppers who want a purposeful SUV with real personality and flexibility, it fits the brief well. The market also shows 32.7% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is built around rugged capability and a durable, function-first approach, with excellent build quality and fit noted in expert testing.

Its off-road hardware and adaptable chassis help it feel engineered for demanding use, while the turbocharged inline-six and supercharged V8 powertrains are described as strong and smooth. The 48-volt mild hybrid setup also restarts seamlessly without shuddering, which supports everyday drivability.

The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a vehicle this complex can become expensive to own if previous maintenance was skipped or deferred.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Defender 110 S is more basic inside, while higher trims add features such as heated and cooled seats, fog lights, surround sound, and more upscale interior touches.
• Powertrain: The turbocharged four-cylinder is best for local use, while the mild-hybrid inline-six adds smoother response and better all-round performance; the V8 is the strongest option.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. A self-steering highway assist is not offered.
• Infotainment: The standard 10-inch touchscreen is joined by an optional 11.4-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with connected apps and a voice assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder is rated at 14.2 L/100 km in city driving, 11.7 on the highway, and 13.0 combined. The six-cylinder is rated at 12.9/10.4/11.8 L/100 km, while the V8 returns 16.4/12.7/14.7 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is offered in 7 trim levels: 110 S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, X, V8, V8 Carpathian Edition, and 130 S.

Here's the short version:

• 110 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Defender’s core character with heated 12-way power seats, leather, and a Meridian sound system. It makes sense if you want the least expensive way into the lineup.
• SE: This trim adds fog lights, half-circle daytime running lights, surround sound, an auto-dimming driver’s mirror, auto high beams, and cooled front seats. It looks like the best-value trim if you want a more complete daily-driver setup.
• X-Dynamic SE: You get silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec seat trim details. Choose this if you want a slightly more distinctive appearance without jumping too far up the range.
• X: This is the feature-rich choice, adding air suspension, a locking rear differential, an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display. It suits you if you want the most capability and tech in one package.
• V8: This trim is about maximum performance, with the blacked-out look and 22-inch wheels and tyres. It is the one to choose if power matters most.
• V8 Carpathian Edition: This is the most exclusive version mentioned, but the pricing context makes it hard to justify unless you specifically want the top-end presentation.
• 130 S: This is the extended-length body style, so it is the pick if you want the most practical Defender layout and extra rear space.

The X trim also brings the more advanced safety and off-road hardware, while the standard safety suite remains consistent across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 156 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 21.25% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $61,587 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $61,587 CAD sits slightly below last year's $78,208 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers than sellers. If you own one, you may need to price it competitively to stand out against the current inventory.

For future resale, the Defender’s distinctive styling and broad appeal should help it hold interest, but condition and equipment level will matter a lot. Higher-priced examples may face more resistance if they drift too far above the market average.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender scored five of five stars in Euro NCAP crash testing and was praised for its solid structure.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Land Rover equips it with six airbags, which is fewer than you might expect for a vehicle in this class. Standard safety equipment includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking, while a 360-degree camera system and a head-up display help with low-speed manoeuvring. A self-steering highway assist is not offered.

Should I buy a 2023 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 21.25% compared with last year.
• It adds the extended 130 body style to a versatile, choice-heavy lineup.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $56,230 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $61,587 CAD average.
• It adds a new touchscreen, standard wireless charging, and a broader trim range.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $71,237 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $61,587 CAD average.
• It adds more features and expands availability of a powerful V8 option.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the added practicality of the 130 and a market that currently favours buyers. If price matters most, the 2022 is the smarter value play; if you want more features and can spend more, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
