Is the 2023 Honda Pilot a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.4/5 user-rated SUV with an expert score of 7.3/10. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, comfortable ride, and roominess for up to eight passengers. The design also gets positive attention, and the cabin is described as a strong fit for families who want a relaxed, practical three-row SUV. On the trade-off side, the expert notes point to merely average fuel economy and steering that feels a bit too light on the highway.

That lines up well with the overview: you get a fully redesigned three-row crossover with a more rugged look, useful tech, and added capability, so it suits you best if you want family practicality with a more adventurous personality. With 31.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also a healthy share of attractive offers in the market.

Is the 2023 Honda Pilot reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a vehicle that feels spacious, comfortable, and solid for family use, which are all encouraging signs if you want something you can count on day to day. The expert notes also describe the Pilot as a comfortable, family-focused SUV with no false alarms during testing, and its advanced safety systems behaved as expected.

Honda’s maintenance and ownership story is also helped by the Pilot’s practical design and thoughtful convenience features. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that fuel economy is only average, so running costs may be less appealing if you rack up a lot of kilometres.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Honda Pilot?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport trim gives you the essentials, but the EX-L adds leather upholstery, a universal garage door opener via HomeLink, second-row sunshades, and the value-focused mix of comfort and convenience features that make it the recommended sweet spot. The TrailSport is the one to consider if you want the off-road-capable setup with its taller ride height, all-terrain tyres, and skid plates.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.5-litre V6 with 285 horsepower and a 10-speed automatic transmission, and Honda’s i-VTM4 all-wheel drive system is standard in Canada. The TrailSport adds a bit more ground clearance and all-terrain tyres, while the overall tuning favours comfort over sporty driving.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard across the range and includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, traffic-jam assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. Front and rear parking sensors arrive on the EX-L and higher trims, while the Touring adds surround-view and multi-view camera systems.
• Infotainment: You’ll want to step up to at least the EX-L if you care about tech, because that’s where you get the larger touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless phone charger. The Touring adds USB ports in every row, a head-up display, a fully digital instrument panel, navigation, Bose premium audio, and remote monitor features.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates 12.4 L/100 km city, 9.3 L/100 km highway, and 11.0 L/100 km combined for the AWD model. The TrailSport is rated at 13.0 L/100 km city, 10.3 L/100 km highway, and 11.8 L/100 km combined, while the Touring comes in at 12.7 L/100 km city, 9.4 L/100 km highway, and 11.2 L/100 km combined.

Which 2023 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?

The 2023 Honda Pilot is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, EX-L, TrailSport, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the redesigned Pilot’s core strengths, standard AWD, and the full Honda Sensing safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the extra comfort and tech upgrades.
• EX-L: This is the best-value trim. You gain leather upholstery, HomeLink, second-row sunshades, the larger touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, and front and rear parking sensors. If you want the most balanced mix of comfort, convenience, and value, this is the one to target.
• TrailSport: Choose this if you genuinely want the off-road-capable version. It adds a taller ride height, all-terrain tyres, and skid plates, making it the right pick for you if you plan to explore rougher terrain.
• Touring: This is the most feature-rich choice, with USB ports in every row, a head-up display, a fully digital instrument panel, navigation, Bose premium audio, remote monitor features, and surround-view and multi-view camera systems. It suits you if you want the most technology and convenience.

The safety package is standard across the range, but the EX-L and higher trims add useful parking aids, and the Touring gets the most advanced camera setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Honda Pilot?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 188 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.77% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $47,221 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Honda Pilot's resale value?

The current average of $47,222 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,199 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in your favour as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy now, you’re entering at a lower average price than last year, which can help reduce depreciation pressure over the near term. The current trend also suggests that well-priced examples should continue to attract attention, especially if they’re in desirable trims and condition.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Honda Pilot safe?

The 2023 Honda Pilot earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard Honda Sensing features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, traffic-jam assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. Front and rear parking sensors are added on the EX-L and higher trims, while the Touring trim gets surround-view and multi-view camera systems.

In testing, the advanced safety features worked as intended, and the adaptive cruise control was described as smooth and well-behaved. If you plan to take the TrailSport off-road, you may want to disable some proximity warnings and low-speed automatic braking because obstacles can trigger them too easily.

Should I buy a 2023 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.77% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It’s fully redesigned for 2023 with a more rugged appearance, more power, and an off-road-capable TrailSport model.

The bottom line: If you want the redesigned Pilot with stronger styling, more capability, and a broad mix of family-friendly features, the 2023 is the one to focus on. If your priority is stretching your budget further, you can also use the softer pricing to hunt for a well-equipped example rather than settling for the cheapest trim.
