Is the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty a good car?

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty earns an 8.5/10 from our experts, and it is described as exceptionally well-rounded for the heavy-duty pickup class.

The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

It is a broad-appeal truck because it is offered in a wide range of trims, so you can match the truck to both your needs and your budget. It also brings powerful engines, incredible towing capability, and easy-to-use technology, which makes it feel current without losing the straightforward character you expect from a heavy-duty pickup.

The trade-offs are that it gets expensive fast, its engines are thirsty, and its wide turning radius can make manoeuvring less convenient.

With 23.5% of listings priced as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty reliable?

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty is presented as a modernised heavy-duty truck that keeps its straightforward, work-focused character while adding useful tech and powertrain updates.

Its 10-speed automatic transmission is described as managing power beautifully, and the diesel powertrain is portrayed as lively from a standstill and able to reach highway speeds with little to no issue. That points to a truck that should feel robust and well sorted in day-to-day use.

Ford also adds practical ownership-friendly touches such as Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, onboard scales, and Trailer Navigation, which can make the truck easier to live with if you tow regularly. The cost-effectiveness commentary also notes that lower-tier trims can still feel impressive for the price, which helps the truck make sense as a long-term purchase.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the truck’s basic competence and more about the realities of owning a large, complex, heavy-duty pickup: higher running costs, more expensive repairs if something does go wrong, and the need to choose carefully based on how the truck was used.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XL is a work truck but still includes 17-inch wheels, vinyl upholstery, a four-speaker sound system, a USB port, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLT adds cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, SiriusXM satellite radio functionality, two wall-style power outlets, and an integrated trailer brake controller. The Lariat brings leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, wireless device charging, dual-zone automatic climate control, a fully digital instrument cluster, remote start, a heated steering wheel, and a larger 12-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. The King Ranch adds 20-inch alloy wheels, two-tone paint, distinctive interior styling, an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium stereo system, auxiliary switches, a spray-in bed liner, LED in-bed lighting, surround lighting, fifth-wheel towing prep, and Pro Power Onboard. The Platinum adds similar comfort equipment with more cosmopolitan styling, while the Limited includes nearly every package and option found on the other trims, plus max-recline seats, a massive dual-panel sunroof, and unique styling.

• Powertrain: The line-up includes a 6.8-litre gas V8 with 400 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque, a 7.3-litre V8 with 430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque, a 6.7-litre PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 with 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, and a high-output PowerStroke turbodiesel with 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the base XL trim, while other trims get standard four-wheel drive, and all versions use a 10-speed automatic transmission.

• Safety package: Ford CoPilot 360 starts at the XLT trim and can include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The parking camera system is especially important on a truck this size, and some towing-focused features such as trailer blind-spot monitoring require additional trailer-mounted cameras.

• Infotainment: The base setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims can get a 12-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, plus a logical control layout and redundant dials for radio and climate functions. The truck also offers multiple USB ports, a wall-style power outlet, wireless device charging, and Trailer Navigation.

• Fuel efficiency: In combined city and highway driving, the high-output diesel returned 13.1 L/100 km. Fuelly data cited in the review suggests around 21 L/100 km for the 6.8-litre gas engine, around 19 to 21 L/100 km for the 7.3-litre gas engine, and 14 to 18 L/100 km for the 6.7-litre diesel engine.

Which 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty trim should I buy?

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the most affordable way into the lineup, and it still gives you the essentials you need for work, including the 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi hotspot, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes the most sense if you want a no-frills truck and plan to add capability rather than luxury.

• XLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more comfortable cabin, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an integrated trailer brake controller, and more convenience without jumping too far up the price ladder.

• Lariat: This is the sweet spot if you want the truck to feel properly modern. The leather upholstery, digital instrument cluster, 12-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and extra comfort features make it a strong choice for buyers who will spend serious time in the cab.

• King Ranch: This is the right pick if you want a luxury-leaning heavy-duty truck with distinctive styling, a premium audio system, and useful towing and bed equipment. It suits buyers who want capability and a more upscale feel in equal measure.

• Platinum: Choose this if you want similar comfort to the King Ranch but prefer a more understated, cosmopolitan look. It adds upscale touches and convenience features that keep the truck feeling premium.

• Limited: This is the top-end choice if you want nearly everything Ford offers in the F-250, including max-recline seats and the dual-panel sunroof. It is best for buyers who want the most luxurious version and are comfortable paying for it.

Starting at the XLT trim, Ford CoPilot 360 adds the core driver-assistance features, and the available towing camera and trailer-assist features become especially valuable as you move up the range.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 23.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 153 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 21.65% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $63,167 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty's resale value?

The current average of $63,226 CAD sits slightly below last year's $80,694 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be more sensitive to trim, mileage, and condition than it would be in a stronger pricing environment.

If you keep the truck well maintained and choose a desirable configuration, you should still have a solid audience later because the F-250 Super Duty has broad appeal in the heavy-duty segment. Still, the current trend shows that buyers are not paying the same premium they were a year ago.

Is the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty safe?

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty does not have crash-test ratings from either NHTSA or IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford CoPilot 360 is available starting at the XLT trim, and depending on the trim it can include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree parking camera system.

For a truck this large, the parking camera system is especially important, and the available trailer blind-spot monitoring system adds confidence when towing. The review also highlights helpful dual-tier power-adjustable and power-telescoping trailer mirrors, plus an industry-first backup camera for when the tailgate is lowered.

Should I buy a 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 23.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 21.65% compared with last year.
• The 2023 brings a broad trim range, updated tech, and an exceptionally well-rounded heavy-duty package.

The bottom line: If you want the most current version of this truck’s updated design, tech, and powertrain mix, the 2023 is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may still make sense, but the 2023’s softened pricing and decent inventory make it a sensible place to shop first.
