For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that heavy-duty capability comes with heavy-duty running costs, especially if you use the truck hard or choose a thirstier engine.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XL is a work truck but still includes 17-inch wheels, vinyl upholstery, a four-speaker sound system, a USB port, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLT adds cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, SiriusXM satellite radio functionality, two wall-style power outlets, and an integrated trailer brake controller. The Lariat brings leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power-adjustable front passenger’s seat, wireless device charging, dual-zone automatic climate control, a fully digital instrument cluster, remote start, a heated steering wheel, and a larger 12-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. The King Ranch adds luxury-truck styling and features such as 20-inch alloy wheels, a two-tone paint job, two-tone brown leather, perforated seats with saddle leather and stitching, an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium stereo system, auxiliary switches, a spray-in bed liner, LED in-bed lighting, surround lighting, fifth-wheel towing prep, and Pro Power Onboard. The Platinum adds similar comfort with more cosmopolitan styling, while the Limited includes nearly every package and option found on the other trims.

• Powertrain: The truck offers a 6.8-litre gas V8 with 400 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque, a 7.3-litre V8 with 430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque, a 6.7-litre PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 with 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, and a high-output PowerStroke turbodiesel with 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the base XL trim, while other trims get standard four-wheel drive, and all versions use a 10-speed automatic transmission.

• Safety package: Ford CoPilot 360 starts at the XLT trim and can include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree parking camera system. Some features depend on trim, so you should confirm exactly what is fitted on the truck you are considering.

• Infotainment: The base setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims can get a 12-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, plus a logical control layout and redundant dials for radio and climate functions. Ford also offers Trailer Navigation.

• Fuel efficiency: In combined city and highway driving, the high-output diesel returned 13.1 L/100 km. Fuelly reports around 21 L/100 km for the 6.8-litre gas engine, around 19 to 21 L/100 km for the 7.3-litre gas engine, and 14 to 18 L/100 km for the 6.7-litre diesel engine.

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the value-focused starting point if you want the basics of the Super Duty experience without paying for luxury features. It still includes useful everyday tech such as Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• XLT: This is the trim that adds the most obvious comfort and convenience upgrades over the XL, including heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, SiriusXM satellite radio functionality, and an integrated trailer brake controller. It is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful equipment without jumping too far up the price ladder.

• Platinum: Choose this if you want similar comfort to the King Ranch but prefer a more cosmopolitan look and upscale presentation.
• Limited: This is the top-end choice if you want nearly every available feature, including max-recline seats and a massive dual-panel sunroof.

Starting at the XLT trim, Ford CoPilot 360 is included, but the exact feature set depends on how much you’ve paid for your truck.

• Deal availability: 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 158 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.51% compared with last year.

The current average of $65,192 CAD sits slightly below last year's $79,997 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more truck for your money today. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means you should expect resale values to depend heavily on trim, condition, mileage, and equipment. Well-equipped trucks with desirable towing or luxury features should hold appeal better than stripped-down examples, but the broader trend still favours buyers more than sellers right now.

The parking camera system is especially important in a truck this large, and Ford also offers trailer blind-spot monitoring and an industry-first backup camera for when the tailgate is lowered.

Should I buy a 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 26.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.51% compared with last year.
• It is the year you want if you value the updated tech and powertrain improvements, plus the exceptionally well-rounded character highlighted by our experts.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want a heavy-duty truck that feels current, well rounded, and easy to tailor to your budget. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2023 stands out for its balance of capability, technology, and trim breadth.
