CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Volkswagen Taos
overall

Summary
With 309 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,299 CAD, 25.9% of 2022 Volkswagen Taos models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Volkswagen Taos 4.38 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos stands out as a “tweener” in the small-SUV market: it is bigger than most small SUVs but smaller than most compact SUVs, which gives it a useful middle ground for shoppers who want extra space without moving up to a larger vehicle. Volkswagen also positions it as part of a broader crossover family, and the result is a model aimed at delivering more space, comfort, and utility than the competition at an affordable price.
That combination makes the Taos appealing to buyers who value practicality first. The available owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for its roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and peppy around-town performance. Owners also tend to like its quality and handling, which some compare favourably with more expensive vehicles.
There are some trade-offs, though. A few drivers have reported underwhelming power, noisy tyres, and missing features such as an electric passenger seat and trunk access via the key fob. Even so, the 2022 Volkswagen Taos remains distinctive for how it blends useful interior space, efficiency, and everyday drivability in a size that sits neatly between two SUV classes.

After few years with a VW Tiguan I bought me an Atlas , the first a good car , the second even better then I bought a Taos, big mistake. The Taos brakes are not as good as the Volkswagen family, also the suspension isn’t as good as the others Volkswagen, even Jetta has a better suspension than Taos . I end up trading in the Taos for an VW Atlas.

This vehicle is peppy around town but also quite comfortable for long trips (with an excellent 400mi range). The factory-equipped tires are noisy, but Ill use them up before replacing them with a quieter set.

| Current Average Price | $22,236 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $22,236 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $26,280 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,251 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −15.29% |
Prices have softened 15.29% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 302 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Volkswagen Taos earns a 4.38/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal for shoppers who want a practical small SUV with extra space. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and peppy around-town performance. The Taos also gets credit for its quality and handling, with some owners comparing it favourably with more expensive vehicles.
That fits the Taos’s role as a middle-ground SUV: bigger than most small SUVs, but smaller than most compact SUVs, so you get useful space and everyday utility without stepping up to a larger vehicle. With 26.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market also looks reasonably favourable for value-focused shoppers.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people find dependable in daily use, with repeated praise for its roomy cabin, excellent gas mileage, and peppy performance around town. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on it for practical commuting and family duty.
Volkswagen also describes the Taos as having rewarding ride and handling characteristics, which supports the impression of a well-rounded small SUV. The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that some of the reported drivability and feature complaints may still matter to you after the warranty period.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Taos comes in Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline trim. The base model is simpler, while higher trims add more upscale cabin materials, with the Highline getting two-tone perforated leather with contrast stitching, an upscale stitched dashboard strip, and matching door panel inserts.
- Powertrain: Every Taos uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The standard 8-speed automatic is smoother, while 4Motion AWD brings a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission that can feel harsh and jerky at times.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Comfortline and up. Automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and rear parking sensors are reserved for Highline, while lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, dynamic road sign display, and remote start require an extra-cost package on Highline.
- Infotainment: Trendline gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while Comfortline and Highline use an 8-inch display with MIB3 software. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start on Comfortline, along with SiriusXM satellite radio with 360L service, voice control, and wireless smartphone charging. Highline adds navigation and an eight-speaker BeatsAudio system.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Taos 4Motion uses 8.5 L/100 km in combined driving, and testing returned 8.7 L/100 km.
Which 2022 Volkswagen Taos trim should I buy?
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is offered in 3 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline.
Here's the short version:
- Trendline: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Taos formula at the lowest price. It has the 6.5-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, but you miss out on the more advanced infotainment and many of the safety upgrades that arrive higher up the range.
- Comfortline: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM with 360L, voice control, wireless charging, and key safety features like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Highline: Choose this if you want the most complete Taos experience, including navigation, the BeatsAudio sound system, automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, and the available package that adds lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, dynamic road sign display, and remote start.
For safety equipment, the most popular driver-assistance features start on Comfortline, while the extra advanced features are tied to Highline and an optional package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 302 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.29% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,236 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos's resale value?
The current average of $22,236 CAD sits slightly below last year's $26,251 CAD.
That softer pricing can be good news if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment if market conditions stay similar. A lower current average can help attract used buyers, yet it may also limit how much value you recover later if you buy near the top of the range.
The Taos’s practical strengths should still help support demand over time, especially for shoppers who want space, efficiency, and a compact footprint. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos safe?
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips the Taos with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert starting on Comfortline. Highline adds automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and rear parking sensors, while lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, dynamic road sign display, and remote start require an extra-cost package.
Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assistance, and Emergency Assist can slow the vehicle, activate the hazard flashers, and bring it to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. One caveat is that reverse automatic braking can be intrusive in some driveway situations, though it can be turned off and left off.
Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Taos or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 26.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It offers a roomy middle-ground size, strong utility, and a practical value focus.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $24,309 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $22,236 CAD average.
- It adds more standard safety features and equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better price and are comfortable with the 2022’s compromises, this year makes the stronger value case. If you are willing to pay more for added standard equipment, the 2023 is the better fit for a more feature-rich shopping list.
