What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline are the three trim levels. The base model is the most stripped-down, while Comfortline and Highline add more of the convenience and safety equipment you may want. The Highline also brings a more upscale cabin treatment, including two-tone perforated leather with contrast stitching.
• Powertrain: Every Taos uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive uses a standard 8-speed automatic, while 4Motion AWD brings a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission and an independent multilink rear suspension.
• Safety package: Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on Comfortline and up. Automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and rear parking sensors are limited to Highline. Lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, dynamic road sign display, and remote start require the extra-cost package on Highline.
• Infotainment: Trendline gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while Comfortline and Highline use an 8-inch display with MIB3 software. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start on Comfortline, along with SiriusXM satellite radio with 360L service, voice control, and wireless smartphone charging. Highline adds navigation and an eight-speaker BeatsAudio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Taos 4Motion uses 8.5 L/100 km in combined driving, and testing returned 8.7 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Taos trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is offered in 3 trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline.

Here's the short version:

• Trendline: This is the least expensive way into the Taos, but it is also the most basic. You get the smaller 6.5-inch touchscreen and fewer convenience and safety features, so it makes the most sense if your priority is keeping the purchase price down.
• Comfortline: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM with 360L service, voice control, wireless smartphone charging, and key safety features such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Highline: Choose this if you want the most complete Taos experience. It adds navigation, an eight-speaker BeatsAudio system, automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, and available lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, dynamic road sign display, and remote start through an extra-cost package.

For safety equipment, the most popular driver-assistance features start on Comfortline, while the more advanced features are reserved for Highline and its package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 280 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.98% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $22,223 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos's resale value?

The current average of $22,368 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,705 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Taos has moved into a more buyer-friendly phase, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar right away. If you buy at today’s average or below, you may have less downside risk than someone who bought when prices were higher.

The current range also matters: if the market stays near this level, well-kept examples should remain competitive with shoppers looking for an affordable, roomy crossover. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos was not crash tested by either NHTSA or IIHS at the time of publication.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert are included on Comfortline and up. Automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and rear parking sensors are limited to Highline, while lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist, dynamic road sign display, and remote start require an extra-cost package on Highline.

Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assistance, while Emergency Assist can slow the vehicle, activate the hazard flashers, and bring it to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. One caveat is that reverse automatic braking was overly sensitive in testing, though it can be turned off in the infotainment system.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Taos or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 21.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.98% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 stands out as a roomy, affordable “tweener” SUV with strong practicality.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $24,141 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $22,368 CAD average.
• It adds more standard safety features and equipment.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is available. If you are willing to pay more for extra standard safety equipment, the 2023 is the cleaner upgrade path.
