What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base LE is the most stripped-back version, while higher trims add more equipment and polish. The Trail grade and Limited trim bring more upscale or specialised content, and the Trail test vehicle is described as having a more distinctive look than the entry model.
• Powertrain: The gas model uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. AWD is standard on all trim levels but the base model, and the hybrid and Prime add electrified efficiency.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes pre-collision with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and road-sign assist. In Canada, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking are also standard.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM. A 9-inch touchscreen is optional on Trail and standard on Limited, along with an 11-speaker JBL audio system, navigation, Safety Connect, and Service Connect.
• Fuel efficiency: The gas model is rated at 8.8 L/100 km city, 6.8 highway, and 7.9 combined with FWD, while AWD versions range from 8.7 to 9.5 city, 6.9 to 7.4 highway, and 7.9 to 8.5 combined.

Which 2022 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 6 trim levels: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Limited, Trail, and TRD Off-Road.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the RAV4’s core practicality and standard safety without paying for extras. It is the value-first choice, but you give up the richer tech and comfort upgrades found higher up.
• XLE: This is the trim that adds more everyday appeal while staying below the pricier versions. It is the best-value pick for many shoppers because it balances equipment and price more effectively than the base model.
• XLE Premium: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It is aimed at buyers who want extra comfort and a more polished cabin experience.
• Limited: This is the most feature-rich mainstream gas trim, with the larger 9-inch touchscreen standard and the JBL audio system available in the upper-tech package. It suits you if you want the most complete non-specialty RAV4.
• Trail: This trim is the one to consider if you want the more distinctive styling and the available 9-inch touchscreen. It is the most characterful choice in the gas lineup.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the most specialised gas trim and is the one to look at if you want the most ruggedly positioned version in the range.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, and Canadian models also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota RAV4?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 787 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.24% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $32,192 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $32,195 CAD sits slightly below last year's $34,338 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, trim, and how well the vehicle is equipped.

Because the RAV4 remains popular and widely cross-shopped, well-kept examples should still attract steady interest. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.44/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 safe?

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick, and the RAV4 Prime is a Top Safety Pick+.

It earns five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes pre-collision with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and road-sign assist. In Canada, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking are also standard.

Front and rear parking assist with automatic braking is available on upper grades. The main caveat is that the Prime’s IIHS result is stronger than the rest of the lineup, so trim choice can affect the safety story slightly.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.24% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.44/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It combines broad appeal, standard advanced safety, and a more mature design.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $30,265 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $32,195 CAD average.
• It offers broad trim and powertrain choice with strong practicality.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $34,946 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $32,195 CAD average.
• It updates the infotainment system and refreshes the cabin experience.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-round pick if you want a well-equipped, widely available RAV4 with softened pricing and strong owner approval. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want the newer infotainment update, the 2023 is worth the extra spend.
