Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise its safety, comfort, smooth ride, and quality feel, and many also like its stylish design. It fits especially well if you want a family-focused three-row SUV that covers the basics well and still brings useful tech and a stout V6.

The main trade-offs are a cramped third row and an infotainment setup that some owners find outdated. Even so, the Highlander’s broad usefulness and standard safety equipment make it a strong fit for shoppers who value practicality over flash. With 30.7% of listings priced as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.

Drivers’ feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for comfort, reliability, and a smooth ride. The expert assessment also describes the Highlander as a vehicle that covers the basics well and provides the kind of long-term usefulness families can count on.

Toyota backs it with a five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty, which helps reduce ownership risk for used buyers. For a used purchase, the main concern is less about the model’s overall dependability and more about finding one that has been maintained properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Highlander?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE gives you standard all-wheel drive, heated front seats, an 8-inch touchscreen, and the core family-friendly basics. The XLE adds more comfort and convenience, while the Limited and Platinum bring the most upscale equipment.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.5-litre V6 with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. It feels stronger once moving than off the line, so test it in city and highway driving.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard too.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, five USB ports, and SiriusXM. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included, and the larger 12.3-inch screen is reserved for higher trims.

Which 2022 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you standard all-wheel drive, heated front seats, an 8-inch touchscreen, and the core safety and convenience features most families need.
• XLE: This is the best-value upgrade if you want a more comfortable daily driver. It adds a heated steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats, wireless charging, a power sunroof, a power liftgate, and second-row sunshades.
• XSE: Choose this if you want the sportier look and feel. It adds unique exterior styling, 20-inch wheels, second-row captain’s chairs, dual exhaust tips, and a sport-tuned suspension.
• Limited: This is the right pick if you want a more premium cabin. It adds heated and ventilated front seats, genuine leather upholstery, a panoramic moonroof, a JBL premium audio system, and the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen.
• Platinum: This is the top choice if you want the most equipment, including a 360-degree parking camera, heated second-row seats, and a rearview camera mirror.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, while some extra parking and visibility features are reserved for upper trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Highlander?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 290 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.15% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $41,552 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $41,625 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,319 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can put some pressure on future resale if you sell too soon. For a seller, the current trend means you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if similar listings are already sitting in the market.

At the same time, the Highlander’s strong reputation for safety, comfort, and family usefulness helps support demand. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags are standard as well.

Some upper-trim safety and visibility features include front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking monitor, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a digital rearview mirror. The lane-centering and lane-keeping systems can feel overly active, so that is worth testing on your usual roads.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.15% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines a standard V6, family-friendly versatility, and strong safety equipment.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $38,485 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $41,625 CAD average.
• It already had added standard safety technology and strong name recognition.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2022 is the stronger all-around pick because prices have eased and the model still delivers the safety, comfort, and versatility families want. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2021 is the better value path, especially if you find one in good condition with the equipment you need.
