The trade-offs are familiar ones: the infotainment system can feel outdated, and the third row is cramped. The expert review also notes that the driver’s seat may not suit taller people as well as it should.

With a moderate market verdict and a broad spread of trims and prices, it fits best if you want a practical SUV with a more refined feel. There are 26.9% good or great deals in the market, which suggests decent shopping opportunities.

Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander reliable?

The expert review reinforces that reputation by describing Toyota’s approach as covering the basics well and pairing that with modern tech and safety features buyers can count on.

Toyota backs the Highlander with a five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty, which helps reduce early ownership risk. For used buyers, the main long-term concern is less about durability and more about whether the cabin layout and tech still suit your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Highlander?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE gives you standard AWD, 18-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The XLE adds more comfort and convenience, while the Limited and Platinum bring the most upscale equipment. The LE is the value-focused starting point, but the XLE is the best-value trim if you want a stronger mix of features without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.5-litre V6 with 295 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is tuned more for confident highway passing than quick off-the-line punch, and standard AWD is the only drivetrain offered in Canada.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense comes standard with forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. All trims also get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, five USB ports, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included, though a larger 12.3-inch screen is available on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada figures are 11.8 L/100 km in the city, 8.6 L/100 km on the highway, and 10.3 L/100 km combined. In testing, the XSE returned 10.0 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, but it still gives you standard AWD, heated front seats, an 8-inch touchscreen, and the core safety and convenience features most families need. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a heated steering wheel, power-adjustable front seats, wireless device charging, a power sunroof, a power liftgate, synthetic leather upholstery, and a digital instrument display. It strikes the strongest balance between price and everyday comfort.
• XSE: This trim adds a sportier look, 20-inch wheels, second-row captain’s chairs, dual exhaust tips, and a sport-tuned suspension. It suits you if you want a more distinctive Highlander with a firmer personality.
• Limited: This is the upscale choice, with heated and ventilated front seats, genuine leather upholstery, acoustic noise-reducing windows, a panoramic moonroof, a JBL premium audio system, and the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen.
• Platinum: This is the top trim and adds rain-sensing windshield wipers, a 360-degree parking camera, heated second-row seats, and a rearview camera mirror for the most feature-rich setup.

The standard safety suite is strong across the lineup, and upper trims add parking sensors, a surround-view parking monitor, and a digital rearview mirror.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Highlander?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price movement to create opportunities.

• Deal availability: 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 271 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.11% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $41,379 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $41,379 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,031 CAD.

That softer pricing can be good news if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values keep easing. The current range suggests the Highlander still holds meaningful demand, especially because it remains a popular family SUV with broad appeal. If you own one and keep it in strong condition, you should still have a reasonable path to resale, but the recent decline shows that timing and trim choice matter.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, and it includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. You also get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and eight airbags across the lineup.

A few upper-trim safety features are optional or reserved for higher trims, including front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking monitor, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a digital rearview mirror. The lane-centering and lane-keeping systems can feel overly active, which is worth noting if you prefer lighter driver-assist intervention.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines a strong V6, standard AWD, and a broad trim range that suits family buyers well.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $38,476 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $41,379 CAD average.
• It is a familiar three-row family SUV with added standard safety technology.

The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the stronger current-market mix of features, safety, and value. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better budget-conscious path.
