Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla a good car?

Generally — the 2022 Toyota Corolla earns 4.2/5 from owners and 7.2/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its dependable design, practicality, and value for money, and they also describe it as a solid car that feels well worth the investment. The Corolla’s appeal is strongest if you want a reliable, sensible compact car with broad everyday usefulness and a practical ownership experience.

The trade-offs are clear: the technology feels outdated, the design can be polarising, and performance is sluggish. Even so, the Corolla’s mix of practicality, value, and familiar usability keeps it relevant if you want a straightforward commuter rather than something flashy.

Good and great deals account for 30.1% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Corolla’s trim walk changes the look and feel quite a bit. The SE and XSE add more aggressive styling, while the Nightshade Edition adds blacked-out trim and the Apex Edition gets a subtle body kit with model-specific 18-inch wheels. Base trims are simpler and less flashy, so make sure the equipment level matches what you want.
• Powertrain: You get a 1.8-litre four-cylinder on L, LE, and XLE models, while SE and XSE models use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder. The base L is the only trim with a six-speed manual on the smaller engine, and the 2.0-litre can also be paired with a manual or CVT. Every 2022 Corolla is front-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Corolla LE, so base-trim shoppers should check that gap carefully.
• Infotainment: The base L gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while all other trim levels get an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system are standard, but wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-litre engine with CVT is rated at 7.9 L/100 km in city driving, 5.9 on the highway, and 6.8 combined. The manual-transmission SE Apex Edition is rated at 8.2 L/100 km city, 6.5 highway, and 7.4 combined.

Which 2022 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Corolla is offered in 7 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE, Apex Edition, and Nightshade Edition.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with the simpler 7-inch touchscreen and fewer standard safety features than higher trims.
• LE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more standard equipment and brings blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert into the mix.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale Corolla with the larger touchscreen and the stronger equipment set that comes with the higher trim.
• SE: This is the trim to target if you want a more engaging look and feel, plus the 2.0-litre engine.
• XSE: Pick this if you want the most fully equipped mainstream Corolla sedan, including the upgraded audio system and the stronger engine.
• Apex Edition: This is for you if you want the sportiest Corolla character, with the lowered suspension and sharper handling, but it is not a full performance model.
• Nightshade Edition: Choose this if styling matters most and you want the blacked-out appearance treatment built on the SE.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Corolla LE.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 502 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.08% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $22,259 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $22,295 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,255 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Corolla has already given back some value, which can make it more attractive to used buyers today. For a future seller, that also means there may be less room for further softening if the market stabilises. The Corolla’s broad appeal, practical reputation, and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time, even if it is not the most exciting compact car in the segment.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2022 Toyota Corolla earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four stars in rollover testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, bringing forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Corolla LE, so base-trim shoppers should note that gap.

The only caveat worth watching is that headlight performance varies by trim, with lower IIHS ratings on some versions.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.08% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds two new colours and keeps the Corolla’s broad mix of body styles, transmissions, and powertrain choices.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $20,766 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,295 CAD average.
• It blends affordability, reliability, and efficiency with a more engaging driving character.

The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing context and the same core Corolla strengths, the 2022 is the safer all-round pick. If your priority is saving money and you still want the Corolla formula, the 2021 is the better value play.
