CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Corolla
overall

Summary
With 540 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,386 CAD, 28.9% of 2022 Toyota Corollas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Corolla 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Corolla remains a solid choice among compact cars, and its appeal starts with how much choice it still gives buyers. Toyota offers sedan and hatchback body styles, manual and automatic transmissions, and multiple powertrain options, including a hybrid. The Corolla sedan is available in L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE grades, plus Apex Edition and Nightshade Edition versions of SE and XSE. For buyers who want a familiar, sensible compact car, that breadth of configuration is a major part of the Corolla’s identity.
For 2022, the only significant change is the addition of two new colours: Ruby Flare Pearl and Wind Chill Pearl. That limited update means the Corolla’s strengths are mostly the same ones that have long defined it: dependable design, practicality, and value for money. Owners also praise its features, while some wish for navigation options and tinted windows. At the same time, the Corolla is not without drawbacks, with outdated technology, a potentially polarising design, and sluggish performance among its noted weaknesses.

Overall im happy with my purchase, it was a good car at a good price, there were a minor dent in the front lip that was conviently placed to be covered by the bottom of the ad, which is misleading but not a deal breaker.

Dependable and attractive design, with practical features so there isnt a bunch of added flash that you end up paying for. Wish there were more of these cars around so the demand would go down. These are higher priced due to demand for sure.

Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Toyota Corolla earns 4.17/5 from owners and 7.17/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its dependable design, practicality, and value for money, and they also like the feature content. The main trade-offs are outdated technology and a potentially polarising design, with sluggish performance also noted. For you, that means the Corolla makes the most sense if you want a sensible compact car with broad configuration choice rather than the most exciting or most modern-feeling option. With 32.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable design and a car that feels well worth the investment, which is exactly the kind of language you want to hear when shopping used. The expert assessment also frames it as a reliable and sensible compact car, with a reputation for being a car you can count on over time. Toyota’s warranty coverage is also straightforward, with a three-year, 60,000-kilometre basic warranty and a five-year, 100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that dated technology and modest performance may feel more noticeable as the car ages.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE and XSE bring more aggressive styling than the lower trims, while the Nightshade Edition adds blacked-out trim and the Apex Edition adds a subtle body kit with model-specific 18-inch wheels. If you want the most distinctive look, those higher trims stand out; if you want simpler transportation, the lower trims are less flashy.
- Powertrain: The Corolla sedan offers a 1.8-litre four-cylinder with 139 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque on L, LE, and XLE, while SE and XSE use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 169 hp and 151 lb-ft. The base L gets a six-speed manual, and the 2.0-litre can be paired with a six-speed manual or a CVT.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Corolla LE.
- Infotainment: The base L gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while all other trim levels get an 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system are standard, but wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-litre engine with CVT is rated at 7.9 L/100 km in the city, 5.9 on the highway, and 6.8 combined. The manual-transmission SE Apex Edition is rated at 8.2 L/100 km city, 6.5 highway, and 7.4 combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, and XSE.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with the simpler 7-inch touchscreen and manual transmission.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale Corolla with the stronger equipment mix and the available JBL audio system.
- SE: This is the right pick if you want the more aggressive styling and the 2.0-litre engine without jumping to the top trim.
- XSE: This is the most feature-rich mainstream Corolla sedan trim, and it suits you if you want the fullest equipment list and the available JBL audio system.
The safety package is strongest once you move up from the base L, so the LE is the trim most buyers should focus on first.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Corolla?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 545 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.60% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,378 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $22,378 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,031 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the Corolla is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly. If you own one and plan to sell later, the recent decline means you may need to price competitively to move it. On the other hand, the Corolla’s broad appeal, practical reputation, and strong owner satisfaction should help keep demand steady. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2022 Toyota Corolla earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, Lane Tracing Assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Corolla LE. One caveat is that the headlights received lower Acceptable or Marginal ratings depending on trim level.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.60% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 adds two new colours and keeps the Corolla’s broad mix of body styles, transmissions, and powertrains.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,205 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,378 CAD average.
- It blends affordability, reliability, and efficiency with a more engaging driving character.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing context and the same core Corolla strengths, the 2022 is the safer default. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2022 market freshness, the 2021 is the better value play.
