How much does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have softened 11.05% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 162 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and spacious interior. It also fits buyers who want a traditional SUV with genuine off-road credibility rather than a softer crossover, while still offering modern infotainment and safety tech. Even so, some shoppers may find the feature set limited for the price. Good and great deals account for 30.2% of listings, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to reliability and a trouble-free ownership experience, alongside praise for its durable, rugged character. The expert assessment also describes the V6 as reliable, even if it feels dated in everyday driving. Toyota backs the 4Runner with a five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about dependability and more about accepting the 4Runner’s age, rougher road manners, and efficiency trade-offs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail grade includes push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, an 8-inch touchscreen, and Toyota Safety Sense P. Heated front seats are not included on the Trail grade but are otherwise standard, and the Limited adds three-row seating.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and a five-speed automatic transmission. It is described as reliable and strong enough off the line, but it feels dated and underwhelming in many everyday situations.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation and a 15-speaker JBL audio system are available.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates consumption at 14.8 L/100 km in the city, 12.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.8 L/100 km combined. The Limited’s full-time 4WD system is rated at 14.9 L/100 km city and 12.6 L/100 km highway.

Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: Trail, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• Trail: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for extra road-focused equipment. It brings the standard 8-inch touchscreen, Toyota Safety Sense P, and the basic utility features that define the model.
• SR5: This trim is the next step up in the lineup and suits you if you want a more mainstream 4Runner setup while staying close to the model’s traditional formula.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more road-oriented 4Runner with 20-inch alloy wheels and X-REAS performance suspension.
• TRD Off Road: This is the one to buy if you want the strongest trail hardware, including a locking rear differential, crawl control, active traction control, multi-terrain select, KDSS, and unique off-road styling.
• Limited: Pick this if you want the most comfort-focused 4Runner, with heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, a 15-speaker JBL audio system, and three-row seating.
• TRD Pro: This is the most capable-looking and most heavily equipped off-road version, with Fox shock absorbers, an aluminium front skid plate, a basket-style roof rack, and TRD Pro badging.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard across the range, but heated front seats are not included on the Trail grade.

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards patience and comparison shopping.

• Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 162 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.05% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $49,245 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $49,452 CAD sits slightly below last year's $55,594 CAD.

That price movement suggests the 2022 model has become more accessible for buyers, which can help support demand in the used market. For a future seller, the current softness means you may not see the same pricing strength that older 4Runner owners enjoyed. Even so, the model’s reputation for ruggedness and reliability should help it remain appealing to shoppers who specifically want this kind of SUV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings in frontal and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings in rollover testing from NHTSA.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Some of these features depend on the automatic transmission, which is the only transmission offered.

The main caveat is that the 2022 4Runner has not yet been evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.05% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances rugged capability with modern infotainment and safety tech.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $47,221 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $49,452 CAD average.
• It emphasises reliability, utility, and rugged capability.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $54,882 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $49,452 CAD average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of current pricing and modern features, the 2022 is the sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the cheaper route into the same rugged formula.

How does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner compare to the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Our experts score the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 7/10 and the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 8/10. The 4Runner leans harder into rugged, old-school SUV character, while the Grand Cherokee offers stronger on-road efficiency and a lower average used price. The 4Runner also has a much smaller used inventory, so you may need to shop more carefully to find the right example. If you want traditional off-road credibility, the Toyota has the edge; if you want broader everyday appeal, the Jeep is the more versatile pick.
