CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 23 currently listed for sale and an average price of $30,701 CAD, 43.5% of 2022 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Outback 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness stands out as a more capable, adventure-focused version of Subaru’s familiar all-wheel-drive formula. Subaru positions it as part of a new family of even more capable SUVs, and it is presented as the first of several so-themed SUVs planned for the brand’s product pipeline. That makes it distinctive not just as a rugged variant, but as the opening move in a broader off-road-oriented direction for Subaru.
Its appeal is tied to the way it aims to improve outdoor capability without undermining the driver-assistance technology that many owners value. Subaru says owners often modify their vehicles for better off-road performance, but that can reduce the effectiveness of the EyeSight driving aids that now come standard on most of the automaker’s models. The 2022 Outback Wilderness is Subaru’s answer to that problem, offering the tougher, more adventurous character buyers want while keeping the brand’s safety technology in mind. Owners also tend to praise its safety features, snowy-weather performance, and rugged appearance, though some note that the power could be better and that the infotainment system can be a bit complicated.

The car has great pick-up speed for highway driving; it has a smooth, comfortable ride! We love the updated screen for the apps as it is much larger and easier to see. There is still the blind-spot assist on the side mirrors, and it is a car that I am now buying for the second time. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone!

The Subaru Outback is a great value for the price. We love all the safety features, the infotainment works well and the outback drives great in snowy conditions. My wife, kids and I could not be any happier with our purchase.

| Year-Round High | $32,453 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,453 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.76% |

There are 309 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Outback earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its safety features, snowy-weather performance, and rugged look. The overview also points to strong everyday usefulness, with a practical, go-anywhere character that suits drivers who want versatility without giving up car-like manners.
The model’s appeal is strongest if you want a capable, weather-ready vehicle with a useful cabin and a distinctive outdoorsy personality. 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights reliability-adjacent strengths such as safety, snowy-condition confidence, and a generally satisfying ownership experience. The expert summary also points to a vehicle built around dependable everyday capability, with a focus on preserving the effectiveness of Subaru’s driver-assistance systems.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some examples may have been modified or used hard, which can affect how well the safety systems and overall vehicle condition hold up.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Wilderness stands apart with 23 cm of ground clearance, more aggressive all-terrain tyres, revised bumpers, black 17-inch wheels, and rugged exterior and interior touches. It also adds a roof rack and rail system with a 700-pound static load rating, plus waterproof cargo-area materials.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It’s strong, but the transmission’s droning character can dull acceleration feel.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.
- Infotainment: The Wilderness uses an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with integrated climate control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but most functions run through the screen.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it should use 10.9 L/100 km in city driving and 8.9 L/100 km on the highway.
Which 2022 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Outback is offered in 1 trim level: Wilderness.
Here's the short version:
The Wilderness is the one to buy if you want the most capable, adventure-focused version of the Outback. It adds the lifted stance, all-terrain tyres, skid plating, revised traction systems, and rugged design details that define this model year’s personality. It also keeps the standard EyeSight safety suite intact, which is a major part of its appeal.
The safety package is standard on this trim, while DriverFocus is not included.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 309 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.76% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $28,635 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $28,635 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,453 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure future resale if you plan to sell soon. A softer market often means sellers need to be more realistic on asking price, especially if the vehicle has higher kilometres or visible wear.
Even so, the Outback’s broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness was not crash-tested as this review was written. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, standard Outbacks earned a "Top Safety Pick+" safety rating for 2021, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2021 Outback a five-star overall rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also gets steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.
DriverFocus distraction mitigation technology is not included on the Wilderness and is reserved for Limited and Premier trim.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It introduces the Wilderness as Subaru’s adventure-focused answer to modified off-road use.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,466 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,635 CAD average.
- It’s a practical, value-focused Outback with strong everyday usefulness.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $31,385 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,635 CAD average.
- It adds fresh styling, updated tech, and the Onyx Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive and capable version of this generation, the 2022 is the one to target. If price matters most, the 2021 is the smarter value play; if you want newer updates, look to the 2023.
How does the 2022 Subaru Outback compare to the 2022 Toyota RAV4?
Our experts score the 2022 Subaru Outback 7.5/10 and the 2022 Toyota RAV4 8.3/10. The Outback leans harder into rugged capability and standard all-wheel drive, while the RAV4 brings a stronger overall expert score and a more efficient engine. The Outback also offers a lower average used price, which may make it the better value if you want adventure-focused character.
