CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 85 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,596 CAD, 24.7% of 2022 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Outback 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness stands out as a more capable, adventure-focused version of Subaru’s familiar all-wheel-drive formula. Subaru positions it as part of a new family of even more capable SUVs, and it is presented as the first of several so-themed SUVs planned for the brand’s product pipeline. That makes it distinctive not just as a rugged variant, but as the opening move in a broader off-road-oriented direction for Subaru.
Its appeal is tied to the way it aims to improve outdoor capability without undermining the driver-assistance technology that many owners value. Subaru says owners often modify their vehicles for better off-road performance, but that can reduce the effectiveness of the EyeSight driving aids that now come standard on most of the automaker’s models. The 2022 Outback Wilderness is Subaru’s answer to that problem, offering the tougher, more adventurous character buyers want while keeping the brand’s safety technology in mind. Owners also tend to praise its safety features, snowy-weather performance, and rugged appearance, though some note that the power could be better and that the infotainment system can be a bit complicated.

The car has great pick-up speed for highway driving; it has a smooth, comfortable ride! We love the updated screen for the apps as it is much larger and easier to see. There is still the blind-spot assist on the side mirrors, and it is a car that I am now buying for the second time. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone!

| Year-Round High | $32,588 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $32,560 CAD |

Is the 2022 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Outback earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its safety features, snowy-weather performance, rugged look, and overall value for the price. That fits the Outback’s use case well if you want a practical, all-wheel-drive vehicle that can handle daily driving and rougher weather with confidence. The market also shows 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which adds to its appeal.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for its safety, value, and all-weather performance. Subaru’s EyeSight system is described as carefully calibrated, and the Outback Wilderness is positioned to preserve that effectiveness even for buyers who want more capability. The model’s strong daily-driver character and rugged hardware suggest solid long-term ownership potential, though used buyers should still pay close attention to how the vehicle has been driven and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Wilderness stands apart with 23 cm of ground clearance, more aggressive all-terrain tyres, revised bumpers, black 17-inch wheels, StarTex water-repellant upholstery, heated seats, a black headliner, and waterproof rear seatback and cargo materials. It also adds a roof rack and rail system rated for a 700-pound static load.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four engine with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with Subaru’s CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It also has revised final-drive ratios, X-Mode with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes, hill descent control, and a 3,500-lb towing capacity.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. You also get steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
- Infotainment: The Wilderness uses an 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen with integrated climate control. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but most functions run through the screen.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it should use 10.9 L/100 km in city driving and 8.9 L/100 km on the highway.
Which 2022 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Outback is offered in 1 trim level: Wilderness.
Here's the short version:
The Wilderness is the trim to focus on if you want the Outback’s most rugged, adventure-ready setup. It adds the lifted stance, all-terrain tyres, skid plating, revised bumpers, and off-road traction features that define this version. It also brings the distinctive interior and exterior treatment that separates it from the standard Outback lineup. For buyers who want the most capable and most characterful Outback, this is the one to target.
The safety package is standard on this trim, but DriverFocus is not included.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 304 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.77% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $29,052 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $29,052 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,560 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can make future resale a little more competitive for sellers. If you buy now, you may be entering at a lower point in the cycle than owners did a year ago. Strong owner satisfaction can still help support demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness did not have crash-test results available in the review, but the standard Outback earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds the Wilderness formula: lifted stance, all-terrain tyres, skid plating, and X-Mode for tougher terrain.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,505 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $29,052 CAD average.
- It focuses on practical everyday usefulness, reliability, and low running costs.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $31,459 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $29,052 CAD average.
- It adds fresh styling, updated infotainment and safety tech, and the Onyx Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive and adventure-ready Outback, the 2022 is the right target. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2021 is the value play. If you want newer updates and can spend more, the 2023 is worth a look.
