CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 92 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,721 CAD, 31.5% of 2022 Subaru Forester listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Forester 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact crossover SUV that was updated with fresh design details, an upgraded package of EyeSight driving assistance technologies, and improved utility features. Those changes help it remain appealing as an all-around choice, especially for buyers who value safety technology and everyday practicality.
Its biggest distinction is the new-for-2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness, which is aimed at taking the Forester farther off-road. Subaru says it adds extra clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty, giving the model a more rugged character than the standard Forester. That makes the 2022 Forester especially interesting for shoppers who want a compact SUV with a tougher, more adventurous edge.
Owner feedback broadly supports that appeal, with praise for the comfortable ride, spacious interior, safety features, and all-wheel-drive capability. At the same time, some reviewers pointed to outdated styling, limited storage space, and a desire for more powerful performance, so the Forester’s strengths are balanced by a few familiar compromises.

I am not an electronic/computer geek and was a bit concerned about all the new technology. Learning to take advantage of all the Subaru Forester has to offer is actually easier than I thought it would be and so appreciated in daily driving. Roomy four door and covered cargo area, keyless entry is handy when my hands are full, great rear vision camera, auto heat/cooling settings and so many great features...wow! A few more cubbies would be my choice of added features. I was driving a 2016 Ford Escape prior to the Forester and liked the trays inside the front doors, the extra little shelf in the console, an extra shelf in the glove box, a couple small change holders by the gear shift and a slightly deeper shelf mid dashboard on top and by the shifter. Overall...I do enjoy the Subaru and the AWD feature that I havent had on any of my other vehicles. In snowy weather I have found it to be quite helpful.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, spacious interior, safety features, and AWD capability. That lines up well with the Forester’s role as an all-around compact crossover SUV for everyday practicality, especially if you value utility and confidence in poor weather. The market also shows 29.9% of listings as good or great deals, which adds to its appeal for value-focused shoppers.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for its comfortable ride, safety features, spacious interior, and AWD capability. The expert review also describes it as durable and well suited to daily living, which reinforces the sense that it’s built for steady, trouble-free ownership.
The powertrain and chassis tuning are aimed more at consistency than excitement, and that usually suits used buyers who want a vehicle they can count on. As with any used Forester, you should still check for signs of hard use, especially if the vehicle has spent time in rough weather or off-road conditions.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Starlink connected services, while Touring and higher trims get an 8-inch screen. The Wilderness adds extra clearance, body cladding, a skid plate, all-terrain tyres, and a full-size spare, but some Canada-specific features differ from the U.S. test vehicle.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard AWD. The Wilderness uses a CVT calibration Subaru says improves initial torque supply and towing capacity.
- Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also included among the standard and available safety features, while Limited and Premier trims add DriverFocus.
- Infotainment: Base models get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Starlink connected services. Touring and higher trims upgrade to an 8-inch screen, with available navigation and Harman Kardon audio.
- Fuel efficiency: According to Natural Resources Canada, the Wilderness should consume 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 9.1 L/100 km.
Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 7 trim levels: base, Convenience, Touring, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard AWD, EyeSight 4.0, and the 6.5-inch infotainment system with smartphone mirroring, so it covers the essentials well.
- Convenience: This trim is a sensible step up if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder. It should suit you if you want a practical daily driver with a bit more comfort and convenience than the base model.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim if you want the upgraded 8-inch screen and access to available navigation and Harman Kardon audio. It’s the trim to target if infotainment matters to you.
- Sport: Choose this if you want a more distinctive appearance and a slightly more expressive version of the Forester without going all the way to the Wilderness.
- Wilderness: This is the one to buy if you want the most rugged Forester. It adds extra ground clearance, protective cladding, all-terrain tyres, a skid plate, and a full-size spare, making it the clear choice for off-road-minded shoppers.
- Limited: This trim adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction, so it makes sense if you want more advanced driver monitoring.
- Premier: This is the top trim if you want the most upscale Forester experience, including DriverFocus and the highest level of comfort and convenience equipment.
Limited and Premier trims equip the 2022 Forester with DriverFocus, a facial recognition technology that monitors for drowsiness and distraction.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 204 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.95% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $27,961 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $29,056 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,265 CAD.
That softer pricing can be a mixed signal for future sellers. On one hand, it suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can put pressure on resale values in the near term. On the other hand, the Forester’s practical reputation and strong owner satisfaction help support demand.
If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it properly, its broad appeal should remain a strength when it’s time to sell. Buyers looking for a safe, practical, all-wheel-drive SUV tend to keep the Forester on their shortlist.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2022 Subaru Forester earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, where it gets a four-star assessment.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 safety system is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The system also benefits from a wider field of vision than before, which Subaru says improves accuracy and smoothness.
There’s also a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking among the standard and available safety features. Limited and Premier trims add DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a new Wilderness trim and upgraded EyeSight 4.0 safety tech.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $29,805 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $29,056 CAD average.
- It gets next-generation EyeSight and an improved standard infotainment system.
The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and the model still brings strong safety, practicality, and owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year update, the 2023 is worth a look for its refreshed safety and infotainment improvements.
