What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base trim is the most stripped-back version, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and premium equipment. The Wilderness stands apart with extra clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower, a CVT, and standard all-wheel drive. The Forester is tuned more for smooth, practical progress than strong acceleration.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also included among the standard and available safety features.
• Infotainment: Base trim includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Starlink connected services. Touring and higher trims get an 8-inch screen, with available navigation and Harman Kardon audio.
• Fuel efficiency: According to Natural Resources Canada, the 2022 Forester Wilderness should consume 9.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 7 trim levels: base, Convenience, Touring, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight 4.0, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so it covers the essentials well.
• Convenience: This trim is the sensible step up if you want a little more comfort and convenience without chasing luxury features. It should suit you if you want a practical daily driver with a bit more polish than the base model.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim if you want the upgraded 8-inch screen and access to available navigation and Harman Kardon audio. It’s the trim to target if infotainment matters to you.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a slightly more expressive version of the Forester without moving into the Wilderness’s off-road focus.
• Wilderness: Pick this if you want the most adventurous Forester. It adds extra ground clearance, all-terrain tyres, a front skid plate, and a 180-degree forward-view camera, making it the clear choice for rougher terrain.
• Limited: This trim adds more upscale equipment and is one of the trims that gets DriverFocus, Subaru’s facial-recognition system for monitoring drowsiness and distraction.
• Premier: This is the most premium Forester in the lineup, and it also includes DriverFocus. Choose it if you want the most comfort and convenience features Subaru offers here.

DriverFocus is standard on Limited and Premier trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

The market looks moderately favourable if you’re a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 217 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.15% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $27,962 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $28,329 CAD sits slightly below last year's $31,183 CAD.

That price decline suggests the Forester is currently more buyer-friendly than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that can mean less immediate upside if you buy at today’s average and try to resell soon after. On the other hand, the model’s practical reputation and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Forester earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, where it receives a four-star assessment.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 safety system is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-centring assist. It also adds Automatic Emergency Steering at speeds under 80 kilometres per hour. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are among the standard and available safety features.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.15% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Subaru’s updated EyeSight 4.0 system and the new Wilderness trim make this year especially appealing.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $29,952 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,329 CAD average.
• It adds next-generation EyeSight safety features and an improved standard infotainment system.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better value if you want the strongest mix of price, safety, and practicality. If you’re willing to pay more for newer tech, the 2023 is the better path.
