Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Drivers consistently praise its affordability, smooth ride, comfortable interior, excellent safety features, and powerful performance, especially with the turbo option. That lines up well with Mazda’s premium-leaning approach for this model year, which aims to give you a more upscale feel without leaving the mainstream compact SUV segment.

With 26.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the CX-5 as a vehicle they feel good about living with over time. The expert assessment also supports that impression by describing the model as a relative bargain with substance behind its premium ambitions, rather than a vehicle that relies on image alone.

Mazda’s emphasis on improved engineering, quieter operation, and stronger structural rigidity also reinforces the sense that this is built for long-term use. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about durability and more about whether the specific example has been maintained well and suits your expectations for tech and cabin space.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GX, GS, Kuro, and GT are the trims aimed at buyers who want slightly better fuel economy and more leisurely acceleration, while the Sport Design and Signature are for you if you want stronger performance and are willing to give up some efficiency. The Signature adds premium Nappa leather upholstery, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents, while the top trim also gets body-colour lower exterior trim.
• Powertrain: The standard Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and Mazda revised the 6-speed automatic for more responsive performance. If you want more punch, the turbocharged 2.5-litre is the one to look for, with standard all-wheel drive across the lineup.
• Safety package: The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GT adds adaptive headlights, while Signature adds a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.
• Infotainment: You get a 10.25-inch Mazda Connect display with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text-messaging support, and Mazda Connected Services. The screen is not touch-sensing, and there is no natural voice recognition, so you’ll be using the centre-console and steering-wheel controls.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 9.3 L/100 km in combined driving, or 9.0 L/100 km when cylinder deactivation is equipped. The turbocharged engine is rated at 9.8 L/100 km in combined driving.

Which 2022 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 6 trim levels: GX, GS, Kuro, GT, Sport Design, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point if you want the CX-5’s core strengths at the lowest price, including standard all-wheel drive and the full i-Activsense safety suite.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the CX-5’s main appeal while moving you up the lineup without jumping straight to the pricier performance-focused grades.
• Kuro: Choose this if you want the standard-engine CX-5 with a more distinctive look and the Mi-Drive system, which adds Normal, Sport, and Off-Road settings.
• GT: This trim adds adaptive headlights, making it a smart pick if you want a stronger safety and convenience package without going all the way to the top.
• Sport Design: This is the trim to target if you want the turbocharged engine option and a more performance-oriented feel.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious choice, with premium interior materials and the most complete safety and convenience equipment, including the surround-view camera system and Traffic Jam Assist.

The GT adds adaptive headlights, while Signature gets the remaining safety features, including the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.

The current average of $27,958 CAD sits slightly below last year's $30,981 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you’re buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. The current trend suggests the CX-5 is still desirable, but not immune to broader used-market pressure.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2022 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.76% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mazda’s updates make it feel more premium, with stronger dynamics and a quieter, smoother ride.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,594 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $27,958 CAD average.
• It adds enhanced technology and a new Kuro Edition.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $30,201 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $27,958 CAD average.
• It stays current-looking but adds only a Rhodium White premium paint option.

The bottom line: If you want the best blend of value, safety, and premium feel, the 2022 is the sweet spot. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is the better budget play; if you want a newer-year example and don’t mind paying more, the 2023 is still a solid but less compelling step up.
