The powertrains are described as strong performers, and the diesel setup is paired with an excellent Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. The truck also comes with a five-year/160,000-kilometre powertrain/drivetrain limited warranty on the Duramax diesel, which adds some peace of mind for long-term ownership.

For used buyers, the main risk is that heavy-duty trucks can see hard use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot more than odometer reading alone.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro is aimed at fleet and contractor use with cloth seats and basic amenities, while the SLE and SLT add more comfort for mainstream buyers. The AT4 is the off-road-focused choice, and the Denali is the luxury-oriented trim. The AT4 and Denali are crew-cab only.
• Powertrain: You can get either the standard 6.6-litre gas V8 or the optional Duramax diesel. The diesel brings abundant power and an Allison 10-speed automatic, while the gas engine is still described as strong.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, Safety Alert Seat, and front and rear park assist. The Teen Driver system is standard.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7-inch or 8-inch colour touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on SLT and above, available on SLE, and not offered on the base Pro. Navigation is standard on Denali and available on SLT and AT4.
• Fuel efficiency: During testing, the truck averaged 16.3 L/100 km in combined driving without a trailer. If you tow or haul regularly, expect fuel use to climb.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD is offered in 5 trim levels: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the work-first choice if you want maximum capability without extra frills. It keeps things basic with cloth seats and simple amenities, so it suits buyers who care most about utility and price.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to luxury pricing. It also opens the door to more tech and convenience features than the Pro.
• SLT: This is the smart step-up if you want a more polished truck with stronger infotainment and comfort content. It is a good fit if you use the truck daily and want a better cabin experience.
• AT4: This is the one to choose if you want off-road hardware and a more rugged personality. It adds the off-road-focused equipment and the kind of features that suit buyers who split time between work, towing, and rougher terrain.
• Denali: This is the luxury pick, with the most upscale feel and the richest feature set. It suits you best if you want heavy-duty capability but also want your truck to feel premium inside.

The AT4 and Denali are offered exclusively in crew cab form, so that trim-level note matters if cab configuration is important to you.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $60,440 CAD sits slightly below last year's $65,139 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean future resale gains are more limited if you buy at the wrong point in the cycle. For a seller, the current trend implies you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if your truck is not in especially strong condition or does not have desirable equipment.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Teen Driver system is standard, which is useful if you share the truck with newer drivers. The available camera coverage is a major strength, especially for trailering and low-speed manoeuvring.

Because of its high gross vehicle weight rating, neither NHTSA nor IIHS has rated the crashworthiness of the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD.

• It stands out as a heavy-duty pickup that balances serious capability with the kinds of features many buyers now expect from a work truck.

The bottom line: If you want a used heavy-duty truck with strong capability, good feature content, and a softer price trend, the 2022 is the one to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market closely and compare condition, equipment, and mileage before deciding.
