Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD a good car?

Generally — the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD earns 4.43/5 from owners and 7.67/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Drivers repeatedly praise its smooth and powerful ride, along with its comfort and features. The user feedback also points to strong value, especially with the Black Diamond Package, which fits the truck’s role as a heavy-duty pickup that still aims to deliver everyday usability and useful equipment beyond towing and hauling.

That broader appeal lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a truck built for demanding jobs, but one that also tries to balance off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety. 22.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD reliable?

User feedback highlights a smooth, powerful, and dependable-feeling truck, with many owners describing it as a vehicle they can count on for capability and comfort. The expert evaluation also points to strong powertrain performance and an excellent Allison 10-speed automatic transmission with the Duramax diesel, which supports the impression of a truck built for hard use.

The cost-effectiveness notes add that the Duramax diesel comes with a five-year/160,000-kilometre powertrain/drivetrain limited warranty, which is a useful ownership perk if you plan to keep the truck for the long haul.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some owners reported quality concerns, so a careful inspection and service-history review matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro trim is aimed at fleet and work use with cloth seats and basic amenities, while the SLE and SLT add more comfort and mainstream appeal. The AT4 is the off-road-focused choice, and the Denali is the luxury-oriented trim. The AT4 and Denali are offered only in crew cab form.
• Powertrain: The Sierra 2500HD uses 6.6-litre V8 engines, with a standard gas engine and an optional Duramax turbodiesel. The diesel pairs with an Allison 10-speed automatic and delivers abundant power, while the truck can feel jittery when unladen.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, Safety Alert Seat, and front and rear park assist. The Teen Driver system is standard.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7-inch or 8-inch colour touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on SLT and above, available on SLE, and not offered on the base Pro trim. Navigation is standard on Denali and available on SLT and AT4, and SLE and above add SiriusXM satellite radio, a WiFi hotspot, and OnStar with connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: During testing, the truck averaged 16.3 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving without a trailer. If you tow or haul regularly, expect fuel use to climb.

• SLE: This is the first step up for shoppers who want more everyday usability. It adds some creature comforts and, compared with Pro, opens the door to more available tech.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 22.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.99% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 stands out for balancing heavy-duty capability with everyday usability, plus useful off-road, infotainment, trailering, and safety content.

The bottom line: If you want a heavy-duty truck that still feels well equipped for daily use, the 2022 is a strong place to start. If your priority is stretching your budget, a nearby model year may offer a different mix of price and equipment, but the 2022 remains appealing if you value its capability, owner satisfaction, and broad feature set.
