Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD a good car?

Generally — with a 4.43/5 user rating and an expert rating of 7.67/10, the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD looks like a strong fit if you want heavy-duty capability without giving up comfort and features. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the smooth and powerful ride, the comfort, and the strong feature set. The user feedback also points to the value you can get, especially with the Black Diamond Package, which lines up well with the truck’s broader appeal beyond pure towing and hauling.

That broader appeal matters because this model is aimed at you if you want a heavy-duty truck that can handle demanding jobs while still bringing off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety into the mix. 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback highlights a smooth and powerful ride, strong comfort, and features that make the truck feel well equipped for daily use and work duty. The same feedback also points to value, which can matter if you plan to keep the truck for the long haul.

From a dependability standpoint, the truck’s strong powertrain and capable drivetrain are presented as major strengths, and the diesel setup is backed by a longer powertrain/drivetrain warranty than the gas engine. If you’re shopping used, the main long-term ownership risk is that heavy-duty trucks can be expensive to maintain and any quality issues from prior use may be costly to sort out.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro trim is aimed at fleet operators and buyers who want big capability without frills, while the SLE and SLT add more comfort and mainstream appeal. The AT4 is the off-road-focused choice, and the Denali is the luxury-oriented version. The base Pro trim is the most stripped-down, with cloth seats and basic amenities rather than leather or fancy tech.
• Powertrain: You can choose between the standard 6.6-litre gas V8 and the optional Duramax diesel paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic. The gas engine is described as strong, while the diesel brings abundant power and very strong towing and hauling capability.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, Safety Alert Seat, and front and rear park assist. The Teen Driver system is standard. You should also note that the truck’s sheer mass makes the available safety systems and cameras especially important.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get either a 7-inch or 8-inch colour touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on SLT and above, available on SLE, and not offered on the base Pro trim. Navigation is standard on Denali and available on SLT and AT4, while SLE and above add SiriusXM satellite radio, a WiFi hotspot, and OnStar with connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: During testing, the truck averaged 16.3 L/100 km in combined driving without a trailer. If you tow or haul regularly, you should expect fuel costs to rise.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD is offered in 5 trim levels: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the work-focused starting point if you want maximum capability and the lowest entry price. It keeps things basic, so it makes the most sense if you care more about utility than comfort or tech.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more creature comforts and broader everyday appeal without jumping all the way to the pricier upper trims.
• SLT: This is the better choice if you want a more polished truck with stronger infotainment and convenience content. It also unlocks more of the connected and wireless tech that makes daily use easier.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the off-road-oriented version. It adds rugged equipment and a more distinctive look, and it suits you best if you plan to mix work use with trail driving or rougher terrain.
• Denali: This is the luxury pick. It is the right trim if you want the most premium cabin experience and the strongest upscale feel in the lineup.

For safety-package shoppers, the available driver-assistance systems and camera views are worth prioritizing as you move up the range.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be choosy if you’re shopping carefully.

• Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 109 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.40% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $60,470 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $60,470 CAD sits slightly below last year's $65,301 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favourable for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to be realistic when it’s time to list. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year’s higher average.

The truck’s broad appeal helps support future demand, especially because it combines heavy-duty capability with comfort, tech, and off-road ability. Strong owner satisfaction can also help keep interest steady when you eventually resell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD safe?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD is available with a wide range of driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, Safety Alert Seat, and front and rear park assist.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Teen Driver system is standard, which is useful if you want to monitor a younger driver’s habits and set limits on speed and audio volume. The truck’s many camera views are also a major safety advantage, especially when you’re towing or manoeuvring a large vehicle.

One important caveat is that the truck’s sheer mass cuts both ways: it can protect occupants in a collision, but it can also be especially harmful to smaller road users. That makes it smart to look for as many safety systems and camera features as you can get.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.40% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 stands out for blending heavy-duty capability with off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety.

The bottom line: If you want a used heavy-duty truck that balances capability with comfort and features, the 2022 Sierra 2500HD is a sensible place to focus your search. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market and decent inventory to shop patiently for a well-equipped example that fits your budget.
