On the expert side, the truck’s powertrains are described as strong performers, and the Duramax diesel with the Allison automatic is called an extremely capable combination. The five-year/160,000-kilometre powertrain/drivetrain limited warranty on the Duramax also adds some ownership reassurance.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that some owners have reported quality concerns and frustrating dealer experiences, so a careful inspection and service-history review matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro trim is aimed at fleet and work use, with cloth seats and basic amenities, while the SLE and SLT add more comfort and mainstream appeal. The AT4 is the off-road-focused choice, and the Denali is the luxury-oriented trim. The AT4 and Denali are offered only in crew cab form.
• Powertrain: You can shop the Sierra 2500HD with 6.6-litre V8 gas or optional turbodiesel power. The gas engine is described as strong, while the Duramax diesel with the Allison 10-speed automatic is especially capable and delivers abundant power.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, Safety Alert Seat, and front and rear park assist. The Teen Driver system is standard.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7-inch or 8-inch colour touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on SLT and above, available on SLE, and not offered on the base Pro trim. Navigation is standard on Denali and available on SLT and AT4, and SLE and above add SiriusXM satellite radio, a WiFi hotspot, and OnStar with connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: During testing, the truck averaged 16.3 L/100 km in combined driving without a trailer. If you tow or haul regularly, expect fuel use to climb.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD is offered in 5 trim levels: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the work-focused starting point, with cloth seats and basic amenities rather than luxury or advanced tech. It makes sense if you want maximum capability without paying for extras.
• SLE: This trim adds more comfort and mainstream appeal, and it also opens the door to more connected features than the Pro. It is the sensible step up if you want a better daily-driver experience without jumping too far in price.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it brings a stronger mix of comfort and technology, including standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus SiriusXM, a WiFi hotspot, and OnStar with connected services.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the off-road-focused version. It adds rugged hardware and a more distinctive look, along with features such as skid plates, all-terrain tires, and off-road suspension tuning.
• Denali: This is the luxury pick, with the most upscale positioning and standard navigation. It suits you if you want the Sierra 2500HD to feel as premium as possible.

The safety package is broad, but the truck’s sheer mass means you should prioritise as many camera and driver-assistance systems as your budget allows.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 113 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.74% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $60,640 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $60,756 CAD sits slightly below last year's $64,453 CAD.

That softer pricing trend suggests future sellers may not see the same strength they would have a year ago, especially if the market stays well supplied. If you buy at the right price now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation later. Well-equipped trims and trucks with desirable features should remain easier to move than bare-bones examples, but the overall direction still favours buyers more than sellers right now.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD safe?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD is available with automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, Safety Alert Seat, and front and rear park assist.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Teen Driver system is standard, which helps parents monitor teen driving habits and set audio volume and vehicle speed limits. The expert review also recommends choosing as many safety systems and cameras as you can afford, since the truck’s size makes visibility and awareness especially important.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD or consider a different year?

• The expert review highlights a truck that balances heavy-duty capability with off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety.

The bottom line: If you want a heavy-duty truck with broad appeal and a softer used-market price than last year, the 2022 is the one to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the market closely and compare condition, equipment, and mileage before deciding.
