What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sierra lineup spans Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. The base Pro is the most stripped-down choice, while higher trims add more upscale materials, larger wheels, and more distinctive styling.
• Powertrain: You can choose from four engine options, including a 2.7L turbo four-cylinder, a 3.8-litre Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six, a 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2L Ecotec3 V8. The diesel and V8 engines use a 10-speed automatic, while the turbo-four uses an eight-speed automatic.
• Safety package: GMC Pro Safety is standard and includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist and lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate, and trailering-focused features include up to 14 camera views, GCW Alert, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and updated adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: Most grades apart from Pro get a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, Bluetooth, OnStar, wireless Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay. Wireless charging is available on higher grades.
• Fuel efficiency: The AT4X is rated at 18.2 L/100 km in city driving, 14.2 L/100 km on the highway, and 16.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the most affordable path into the Sierra, but it is also the most basic. It suits you if you want the truck’s core capability and are willing to give up the richer cabin and high-end tech found higher up the range.
• SLE: This is the first step up if you want a more rounded daily driver without jumping straight to premium pricing. It should suit you if you want a better balance of equipment and value than the Pro.
• Elevation: This trim adds a more distinctive look and sits in the middle of the range, making it a sensible choice if you want style without going all the way to luxury pricing.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it moves you closer to the Sierra’s upscale personality while keeping the truck more attainable than the top trims.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the off-road-focused character and a more rugged setup. It is the right fit if you want capability with a tougher appearance and equipment set.
• Denali: This is the luxury-leaning choice if you want a more premium cabin and a more upscale presentation without stepping into the most expensive versions.
• AT4X: This is the more serious off-road trim, with premium leather, unique trim details, Multimatic DSSV dampers, e-locking front and rear differentials, and extra suspension travel. It suits you if you want off-road hardware without giving up luxury touches.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top choice if you want the most luxurious Sierra experience. It adds full-grain leather, open-pore Paldao wood, microsuede trim, and standard Super Cruise.

GMC Pro Safety is standard, while Super Cruise is limited to Denali Ultimate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 926 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.59% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $45,870 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $45,870 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,882 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future buyers but may limit upside for a seller in the near term. If you plan to resell later, the current trend means you should be realistic about depreciation and trim-specific demand.

Higher-spec versions with strong equipment and broad appeal should hold attention better than stripped-down examples. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 received mostly “Good” crash safety ratings from IIHS, but it earned a “Marginal” grade in the front-passenger small overlap test and a “Poor” grade for headlights.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

GMC Pro Safety is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist and lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate, and trailering-focused safety features include up to 14 camera views, GCW Alert, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and updated adaptive cruise control.

The headlight result is the main caveat to keep in mind, especially if you’re comparing trims and equipment packages.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 brings a major makeover with a more upscale cabin, standard high-end technology, and new premium trims.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $38,554 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $45,870 CAD average.
• It offers a familiar truck formula with distinctive styling and an optional carbon-fibre composite cargo bed.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $49,041 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $45,870 CAD average.
• It pushes luxury further with the Denali Ultimate and even more high-end features.

The bottom line: If you want the biggest step forward in design, tech, and trim variety, the 2022 is the strongest all-around choice. If price matters most, the 2021 is the value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the most upscale version of this truck.
