What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. The base Pro is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add the richer cabin materials, larger wheels, and more premium presentation that define the Sierra’s upscale appeal.
• Powertrain: You can find four engine options, including a 2.7L turbo four-cylinder, a 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six, a 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2L Ecotec3 V8. The diesel and V8s use a 10-speed automatic, while the turbo-four uses an eight-speed automatic.
• Safety package: GMC Pro Safety is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is limited to the Denali Ultimate.
• Infotainment: Most grades apart from Pro get a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and OnStar. Higher grades can also add wireless charging, a 15-inch head-up display, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The AT4X is rated at 18.2 L/100 km in city driving, 14.2 L/100 km on the highway, and 16.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the work-focused entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Sierra’s basic capability and are willing to give up the richer cabin and tech upgrades found higher up the range.
• SLE: This is the first trim where the Sierra starts to feel more complete for everyday use, making it a sensible value choice if you want a better balance of equipment and price.
• Elevation: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look without jumping all the way to the luxury trims.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it moves you into a more premium-feeling Sierra without the big price jump of the top-end models.
• AT4: Pick this if you want the off-road-oriented character and a more rugged setup than the mainstream trims.
• Denali: This is the luxury-leaning choice if you want the Sierra’s upscale image and richer interior without going all the way to the most expensive versions.
• AT4X: This is the most capable off-road-focused trim in the lineup, with the most specialised hardware and a more premium cabin than the standard AT4.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top luxury pick, and it’s the one to buy if you want the most advanced tech and the most upscale presentation in the range.

GMC Pro Safety is standard, while Super Cruise is limited to the Denali Ultimate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 901 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.84% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $46,825 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $46,825 CAD sits slightly below last year's $52,516 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future buyers but may limit near-term upside for sellers. If you’re planning to resell later, the current trend means you should be realistic about depreciation from today’s average.

The Sierra’s premium positioning can still support demand, especially for well-equipped trims and desirable powertrains. Strong owner satisfaction also helps keep interest steady when you eventually list it.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 received mostly “Good” crash safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it earned a “Marginal” grade in the front-passenger small overlap test and a “Poor” grade for headlights.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

GMC Pro Safety is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on the Denali Ultimate, and it adds hands-free driving with automatic lane changes and trailering capability.

The main caveat is the weaker headlight result, which is worth keeping in mind if you often drive at night. If safety is a top priority, you’ll want to pay close attention to trim and equipment level rather than assuming every Sierra is equally equipped.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.84% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 brings a major makeover with a more upscale cabin, stronger tech, and new Denali Ultimate and AT4X trims.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $39,376 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $46,825 CAD average.
• It offers a familiar, upscale-feeling Sierra with distinctive styling and an optional carbon-fibre composite cargo bed.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $49,725 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $46,825 CAD average.
• It pushes luxury further with the Denali Ultimate and an even broader premium focus.

The bottom line: If you want the biggest step forward in design, tech, and trim variety, the 2022 is the right year to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value path, while the 2023 makes sense if you want to spend more for the most upscale version of the Sierra formula.
