What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sierra lineup spans Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. Base trims are much simpler, while higher trims add more upscale materials, larger wheels, and more distinctive styling; Denali Ultimate and AT4X are the most specialised versions.
• Powertrain: You can find four engine options, including a 2.7L turbo four-cylinder, a 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six, a 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2L Ecotec3 V8. The diesel is the efficiency-minded choice, while the higher-output V8 is standard on the AT4X and Denali Ultimate.
• Safety package: GMC Pro Safety is standard and includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist and lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is limited to the Denali Ultimate, where it is standard.
• Infotainment: Most grades apart from Pro get a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and OnStar. Higher grades can also add wireless charging, a 15-inch head-up display, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The AT4X is rated at 18.2 L/100 km in the city, 14.2 L/100 km on the highway, and 16.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the most affordable entry point, but it is also the most basic. It makes sense if you want the Sierra name and core truck capability without paying for the premium features that define the rest of the lineup.
• SLE: This is the first trim where the Sierra starts to feel more complete for everyday use. It adds more equipment than Pro without jumping too far up the price ladder, making it a sensible value choice for many buyers.
• Elevation: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a stronger visual presence. It sits above the mainstream trims and gives you a more upscale feel without going all the way to luxury pricing.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it balances premium features, stronger equipment, and broader appeal. It is a smart middle ground if you want the Sierra’s upscale character without stretching into the highest-priced models.
• AT4: This is the right pick if you want the off-road-focused personality and a more rugged setup. It adds a more adventurous character while still keeping the Sierra’s premium feel.
• Denali: This is the luxury trim for buyers who want the Sierra to feel distinctly upscale. It brings the premium styling and richer cabin presentation that define the truck’s higher-end identity.
• AT4X: This is the purpose-built off-road model, with premium leather, unique trim, and a more serious hardware story than AT4. It suits you if you want the most capable rugged version without giving up luxury touches.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top choice if you want the most lavish Sierra experience. It adds the highest-end cabin treatment and is the only trim with Super Cruise as standard.

Super Cruise is limited to the Denali Ultimate, where it is standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.

• Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 881 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.12% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $47,500 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $47,500 CAD sits slightly below last year's $52,849 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favour, which can make it harder for future sellers to command top dollar immediately. If you own one now, the upside is that the Sierra still has broad appeal thanks to its premium positioning, strong feature set, and wide trim range.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 received mostly “Good” crash safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but it earned a “Marginal” grade in the front-passenger small overlap test and a “Poor” grade for headlights.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

GMC Pro Safety is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist and lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is a standout feature, but it is limited to the Denali Ultimate and is standard there.

The main caveat is the weaker IIHS headlight result, which is worth keeping in mind if safety equipment is a priority on your shortlist.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.12% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It brings a major makeover with a more upscale cabin, standard high-end tech, and new trims like AT4X and Denali Ultimate.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $39,770 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $47,500 CAD average.
• It offers a more familiar Sierra formula with distinctive styling and an optional carbon-fibre composite cargo bed.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $50,007 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $47,500 CAD average.
• It pushes luxury further with the Denali Ultimate and a stronger premium-truck focus.

The bottom line: If you want the biggest step forward in design, tech, and trim variety, the 2022 is the sweet spot. If price matters most, the 2021 is the value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want to spend more for a further luxury upgrade.
