Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Maverick marks the return of the compact pickup truck, and its appeal starts with how approachable it is. Ford positions it as a smaller, simpler alternative to its larger trucks, and the Maverick is the smallest Ford truck in over a decade. It also uses car-like unibody construction for greater refinement and emphasises fuel efficiency with a standard hybrid powertrain.
What makes the 2022 Ford Maverick especially distinctive is how straightforward Ford kept it. It is available in just three trim levels—XL, XLT, and Lariat—with a single bed length and cab configuration. That simplicity may limit choice for shoppers who want more variety, but it also helps make the Maverick feel focused and easy to understand. Owners’ feedback echoes that appeal, with praise for its compact size, fuel efficiency, value for money, and practicality, especially in urban settings. At the same time, some buyers are frustrated by the limited options on lower trims and by dealer markups.

I absolutely love this vehicle- I bought it as it is a hybrid small pick up truck. The only thing I wish is that it had cruise control. I understand the XLT models do have it, my XL does not. This is the first Ford I have owned in 30+ years, the competitors do not have any models similar. No small chevy, dodge pickups on the market....

Is the 2022 Ford Maverick a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Ford Maverick earns a 4.65/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its compact size, fuel efficiency, and value for money, and they also highlight its practicality for urban use. That lines up with the Maverick’s role as a smaller, simpler, more approachable pickup with a standard hybrid powertrain and car-like refinement. The market also shows 28.2% of listings as good or great deals, which adds to its appeal for value-focused shoppers.
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a truck that feels dependable, practical, and easy to live with over time, especially if you want something useful without stepping up to a larger pickup. The expert drive notes also emphasise that the hybrid powertrain feels smoother and more refined than the turbo-four, which supports the case for everyday confidence. Ford’s three-year, 60,000-kilometre bumper-to-bumper warranty and five-year, 100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty also help reduce early ownership risk.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the truck’s core appeal and more about finding one that hasn’t been overpriced or lightly equipped for the money.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Maverick?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL is the most stripped-down version, while XLT and Lariat add more comfort and convenience features. Higher trims can bring luxury packages with a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel and heated seats, and the Lariat is also the basis for the limited First Edition package.
- Powertrain: The standard hybrid uses a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with a single electric motor and CVT, while the optional 2.0L EcoBoost turbo-four brings more power, an eight-speed automatic, and available AWD. The hybrid is FWD only, and it is the smoother, more refined choice.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams as standard. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane centring, and evasive steering assist are optional, so check carefully if you want those features.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. The system uses Sync 3 rather than Sync 4, so you do not get wireless smartphone integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is rated at 6.3 L/100 km combined, while the 2.0-litre EcoBoost AWD is rated at 9.6 L/100 km combined.
Which 2022 Ford Maverick trim should I buy?
The 2022 Ford Maverick is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the value play if you want the Maverick’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. It still gets the hybrid powertrain, the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the standard Ford Co-Pilot360 safety suite, so you are not giving up the essentials.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without pushing the truck into luxury pricing. It is also one of the trims that can be paired with the available luxury package, which adds features like a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel and heated seats.
- Lariat: Choose this if you want the most upscale Maverick experience in the lineup. It is the trim that can be paired with the First Edition package, and it is also eligible for the luxury package content that adds more premium touches.
The standard safety package is broad, but several driver-assistance features remain optional, so verify equipment carefully on any used example.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Maverick?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 163 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.39% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $29,675 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Maverick's resale value?
The current average of $29,675 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,044 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the Maverick has moved into a more buyer-friendly phase, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract attention if they price competitively. The current market also shows a fairly tight year-round range, which can help support values for well-kept examples. Strong owner satisfaction should continue to help demand, especially for trucks with the hybrid powertrain and desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick safe?
The 2022 Ford Maverick does not have crash-test ratings listed yet.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane centring, and evasive steering assist are optional extras, so you will want to confirm which systems are fitted on any used truck you are considering.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Maverick or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 launches the Maverick as a compact, hybrid-focused pickup with simple trim structure and strong value.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $33,228 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $29,675 CAD average.
- It adds the Tremor package for more off-road capability.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, efficiency, and everyday usefulness, the 2022 is the smarter buy. If you are willing to pay more for added off-road capability, the 2023 is the better fit.
