Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Maverick marks the return of the compact pickup truck, and its appeal starts with how approachable it is. Ford positions it as a smaller, simpler alternative to its larger trucks, and the Maverick is the smallest Ford truck in over a decade. It also uses car-like unibody construction for greater refinement and emphasises fuel efficiency with a standard hybrid powertrain.
What makes the 2022 Ford Maverick especially distinctive is how straightforward Ford kept it. It is available in just three trim levels—XL, XLT, and Lariat—with a single bed length and cab configuration. That simplicity may limit choice for shoppers who want more variety, but it also helps make the Maverick feel focused and easy to understand. Owners’ feedback echoes that appeal, with praise for its compact size, fuel efficiency, value for money, and practicality, especially in urban settings. At the same time, some buyers are frustrated by the limited options on lower trims and by dealer markups.

I absolutely love this vehicle- I bought it as it is a hybrid small pick up truck. The only thing I wish is that it had cruise control. I understand the XLT models do have it, my XL does not. This is the first Ford I have owned in 30+ years, the competitors do not have any models similar. No small chevy, dodge pickups on the market....

Is the 2022 Ford Maverick a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Ford Maverick earns a 4.65/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its compact size, fuel efficiency, and value for money, and they also like how practical it is for everyday use, especially in urban settings. The Maverick’s straightforward packaging and approachable size fit shoppers who want a smaller, simpler pickup that still feels useful. With 30.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market also looks reasonably favourable if you are shopping carefully.
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a truck that feels dependable, with repeated praise for its practicality, fuel efficiency, and value. The Maverick’s straightforward design and strong everyday usefulness also support the impression that it is built to be easy to live with over the long term. Ford’s three-year, 60,000-kilometre bumper-to-bumper warranty and five-year, 100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty add some reassurance for used buyers, but you should still watch for signs of hard use and any issues tied to limited equipment on lower trims.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Maverick?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL is the most stripped-back version, while XLT and Lariat add more comfort and convenience. Higher trims can bring features such as a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, heated seats, leather upholstery, and 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, while the XL uses 17-inch steel wheels. If you want the best balance of equipment and value, the XLT is the one to focus on first.
- Powertrain: You get a standard 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder hybrid with a single electric motor and CVT, or an optional 2.0L EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic. The hybrid is front-wheel drive only and is the smoother, more refined choice, while the EcoBoost adds all-wheel drive, stronger acceleration, and more towing capability.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane centring, and evasive steering assist are optional, so check carefully if you want those features on a used example.
- Infotainment: The Maverick uses Sync 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot that can support up to 10 devices. Wireless smartphone integration is not included, and embedded navigation is not part of the setup.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is rated at 6.3 L/100 km combined, while the 2.0-litre EcoBoost AWD is rated at 9.6 L/100 km combined. If fuel savings matter most, the hybrid is the clear standout.
Which 2022 Ford Maverick trim should I buy?
The 2022 Ford Maverick is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and can live with the most basic equipment. It still gets the Maverick’s core strengths, including the hybrid powertrain, but you should expect the fewest comfort and convenience features.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds meaningful equipment without pushing the price as high as the Lariat. It is also the trim where more comfort-focused options and packages start to make the truck feel more complete.
- Lariat: This is the most upscale version, aimed at buyers who want the most comfort and convenience the Maverick offers. It is the trim to consider if you want a more premium-feeling small pickup and are willing to pay for it.
Standard safety features under the Ford Co-Pilot360 banner include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane centring, and evasive steering assist are optional extras.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Maverick?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 163 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.36% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $29,720 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Maverick's resale value?
The current average of $29,720 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,082 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the Maverick has become a bit easier to buy, which can also mean future sellers may need to stay competitive on asking price. If you own one, strong fuel efficiency and broad practicality should help keep it appealing to used shoppers. The truck’s straightforward formula and strong owner satisfaction also support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick safe?
The 2022 Ford Maverick does not have crash-test ratings listed here yet.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane centring, and evasive steering assist are optional, so lower trims may leave you wanting more if safety tech is a priority.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Maverick or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It delivers a standard hybrid powertrain, compact size, and strong value in a simple, easy-to-shop package.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $33,220 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $29,720 CAD average.
- It adds the Tremor package for more off-road capability.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want the lower price, strong fuel efficiency, and the Maverick’s core appeal without paying extra for newer-year changes. If you want more off-road capability and do not mind spending more, the 2023 is worth a look.
