Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 a good car?

The expert assessment also describes it as a solid, secure vehicle on the road, with a cabin that stays serenely quiet and a suspension that smooths out bumps.

Volvo’s premium positioning means you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and any signs of neglected upkeep, especially on higher-output versions.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base T5 Momentum gives you the core XC60 experience, while higher trims add more luxury equipment and visual polish. The source material also notes that top trim levels can wear up to 22-inch alloy wheels, and the safety equipment is broadly strong across the range.
• Powertrain: You get a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre gasoline engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission. T5 models make 250 horsepower, T6 models increase output to 316 hp, and T8 models add an electric motor for plug-in hybrid performance and limited electric-only driving.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, low- and high-speed collision mitigation, vehicle/cyclist/large animal detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, oncoming mitigation, rear park assist camera, and more. Pilot Assist is available, but not every trim gets every feature.
• Infotainment: The XC60 uses Volvo’s Sensus system with a 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are built in, but the system has a learning curve and some owners may miss wireless smartphone integration.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada figures range from 11.1 L/100 km city, 8.3 L/100 km highway, and 9.9 L/100 km combined for the T5 to 9.3 L/100 km combined for the T8 PHEV, with 4.0 Le/100 km combined in electric-only mode.

Which 2021 Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 is offered in 6 trim levels: T5 Momentum, T6, R-Design, Inscription, XC60 Recharge T8 eAWD Inscription Expression, XC60 T8 eAWD R-Design, and XC60 T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered.

Here's the short version:

• T5 Momentum: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the XC60’s core luxury, safety, and style without paying for extra power or premium extras.
• T6: This trim is the sensible upgrade if you want stronger performance from the 316-hp powertrain while staying in the mainstream of the lineup.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier look and a more expressive feel, especially if appearance matters as much as equipment.
• Inscription: This is the more upscale comfort-focused choice for buyers who want a richer cabin and a more premium overall presentation.
• XC60 Recharge T8 eAWD Inscription Expression: This is the efficiency-minded plug-in hybrid option if you want electric-only driving capability and strong combined output.
• XC60 T8 eAWD R-Design: Pick this if you want the plug-in hybrid powertrain with a sportier trim character.
• XC60 T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered: This is the most potent and most specialised version, aimed at buyers who want the highest-output XC60 in the range.

Pilot Assist is available, and the XC60’s safety equipment is a major strength across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards patience and comparison shopping.

• Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 154 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.89% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $30,692 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC60's resale value?

The current average of $31,386 CAD sits slightly below last year's $36,880 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favour, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the vehicle is especially well kept. If you own one now, strong condition, complete service records, and desirable equipment will matter more when it comes time to sell.

The current price range also shows that buyers still have room to shop carefully, which can keep resale values from rebounding too quickly.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the XC60 T5 AWD and XC60 T6 AWD received five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, low- and high-speed collision mitigation, vehicle/cyclist/large animal detection, driver alert control, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, oncoming mitigation, front, side, and curtain airbags with driver-side knee airbag, whiplash protection system in front seats, slippery road/hazard light alert, rear park assist camera, and power child locks on the rear doors.

Pilot Assist is available, adding adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping support. The main caveat is that the safety story is strongest on the trims specifically called out in the crash-test results.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC60 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines luxury-level appointments, exceptional safety, and a lusty powertrain.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $35,247 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $31,386 CAD average.
• It adds new mild-hybrid powertrains and an Android-based infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it delivers the XC60’s core strengths at a lower average price. If you want newer tech and updated powertrain choices, the 2022 is the better path, but you’ll pay more for it. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2021 remains the more compelling choice.
