How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 15.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 76 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for you to compare.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Generally — the 2021 Volkswagen Passat earns 4.33/5 from owners and 6.5/10 from our experts. The model scores 7/10 across Look and feel, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Volkswagen positions it as a value-focused midsize sedan, and that shows in the straightforward cabin, conventional four-door layout, and emphasis on simplicity over flash. The 2020 update helps it feel more current, while the 2021 changes make it easier to understand with a smaller trim lineup and standard adaptive cruise control.

It suits you best if you want a familiar midsize sedan that covers the basics without unnecessary complexity. That said, the Passat is more about sensible transportation than standout style, tech, or driving excitement.

38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Volkswagen’s approach here is simple: one engine, front-wheel drive, and a conventional automatic transmission. That kind of straightforward hardware can be appealing if you want to avoid complexity, and the Passat’s value-focused positioning supports that impression. The expert assessment also describes it as a well-executed midsize sedan that should make a good daily driver.

The fuel-consumption figure of 8.3 L/100 km combined is respectable for the class, though not class-leading, and the overall package is built around practicality rather than novelty. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the Passat’s plain-jane character and average efficiency will still suit your needs over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Passat?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Highline and Execline are the two trims for 2021, and the Execline adds 19-inch wheels and an Adaptive Front-lighting System. The cabin is clean and functional, but the base setup is intentionally plain, so you should decide whether the extra equipment in the higher trim is worth it for you.
• Powertrain: Every 2021 Passat uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. It makes 174 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque, and the power delivery can feel uneven until you switch to Sport mode or manually select gears.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, VW’s Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, and the Intelligent Crash Response System. Lane-keep assist and lane departure warning are equipped on the Execline grade.
• Infotainment: You get Volkswagen’s MIB2 system with a 6.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto through App-Connect, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a single USB-A port. Execline models add built-in navigation and an eight-speaker Fender premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel consumption at 8.3 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 2 trim levels: Highline and Execline.

Here's the short version:

• Highline: This is the trim to focus on if you want the best value, because it gives you the core Passat experience with the standard safety and convenience features, plus the straightforward cabin and value-oriented positioning that define the car.
• Execline: Choose this if you want the more fully equipped version, since it adds 19-inch wheels, an Adaptive Front-lighting System, built-in navigation, an eight-speaker Fender premium audio system, and lane-keep assist with lane departure warning.

Adaptive cruise control is standard on all trim levels, while lane-keep assist and lane departure warning are reserved for the Execline.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Passat?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 76 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.43% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,282 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $19,282 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,800 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Passat has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic about what the market will bear. Because the model is positioned as a value-focused midsize sedan and is nearing the end of its Canadian run, resale strength is likely to depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on brand-new-car appeal.

If you buy well and keep the car in good shape, you should be able to appeal to shoppers who want a simple, conventional sedan. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2021 Passat earns top “good” scores in all IIHS crash tests, though its standard headlights only earned a “marginal” rating.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen makes adaptive cruise control standard on all trim levels, along with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Execline adds lane-keep assist and lane departure warning. VW’s Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Intelligent Crash Response System are also standard.

The headlight rating is the main caveat to keep in mind, especially if you do a lot of night driving. That makes the higher trim’s added equipment worth a closer look if safety tech matters to you.

Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.43% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model simplifies the lineup by dropping the Comfortline trim and makes adaptive cruise control standard.

The bottom line: The 2021 Passat makes the most sense if you want a straightforward, value-focused midsize sedan with a simpler trim structure and standard adaptive cruise control. If you’re price-sensitive, this model year is especially worth a look because the market has softened and there are enough listings to compare before you buy.
