Drivers consistently praise its value, reliability, and resale potential, and they also like its features, performance, and durability. That lines up with the Tacoma’s role as a rugged midsize pickup that prioritises capability over polish, especially if you want a truck that feels built for work and weekend use. Even so, some shoppers may still want more advanced technology and stronger everyday punch.

The market also looks supportive, with 24.3% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Drivers describe the Tacoma as reliable, dependable, and built for the long-term, with a reputation that helps explain why so many buyers keep coming back to it. The expert assessment also points to Toyota’s excellent reliability reputation, and the truck’s straightforward mechanical setup supports that impression. Toyota’s three-year, 60,000 km basic warranty and five-year, 100,000 km powertrain warranty add some reassurance for used buyers.

For a used buyer, the main risk is less about outright fragility and more about living with a truck that can feel rougher and less refined than newer rivals over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma’s rugged styling and body-on-frame construction suit buyers who value durability and off-road use, but the base truck is more basic inside and can feel sparse compared with higher trims.
• Powertrain: In Canada, you get a 3.5-litre V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, plus either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The setup is capable, but fuel use can climb in off-road-oriented versions.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The package is standard, but the Tacoma does not add some rival features such as lane-keep assist or trailer-capable blind-spot monitoring.
• Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch unit. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth are standard, and SiriusXM is included on every trim except the base model. OTA capability is not mentioned.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the automatic 4WD V6 at 13.0 L/100 km in the city, 10.5 on the highway, and 11.8 combined. With the manual, those figures rise to 13.8, 11.4, and 12.7, and TRD Off Road and Pro versions go to 13.8/11.7/12.9.

Which 2021 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 7 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s core capability at the lowest price, but you give up some convenience and tech compared with higher trims.
• SR5: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more everyday usability while staying closer to the Tacoma’s accessible end of the range.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more feature-rich Tacoma with a stronger visual and equipment step up without going all the way into the off-road-focused models.
• TRD Sport Premium: This suits you if you want the Sport trim’s equipment with a more upscale feel and more comfort-oriented content.
• TRD Off Road: This is the one to target if you want the Tacoma’s off-road hardware and capability without paying for the top-end model.
• TRD Off Road Premium: Pick this if you want the off-road equipment plus more comfort and convenience.
• TRD Pro: This is the most off-road-focused Tacoma, with Fox internal-bypass shocks, a 1-inch front lift, retuned rear suspension, and a front skid plate.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup.

• Deal availability: 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 230 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.08% compared with last year.

What is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $43,221 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,535 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also gives future sellers a useful benchmark: the market has already adjusted downward from last year’s level. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to the prior average. The Tacoma’s reputation for durability and strong demand should still help support values over time, especially if you keep mileage and condition in check.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma safe?

It also earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The Tacoma also earned the highest Superior rating for front-crash prevention tech.

One caveat is that headlight performance varies by trim, with Good and Marginal ratings depending on the version you choose.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 24.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.08% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds two new special editions and standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $40,120 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $43,221 CAD average.
• It focuses on capability and off-road confidence with useful design and technology updates.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,600 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $43,221 CAD average.
• It keeps the Tacoma relevant with modern tech, safety, and strong off-road ability.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the right pick if you want the updated Tacoma formula without paying more for the next model year. If price matters most, the 2020 is the better value path; if you want to spend a bit more for the newer-year alternative, the 2022 is the cleaner comparison.
