How much does the 2021 Toyota Tacoma cost?

Prices have softened 5.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 227 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.9/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.

Drivers consistently praise its value, reliability, and resale potential, and many also like its features, performance, and durability. For you, that means this truck makes the most sense if you want a proven midsize pickup with rugged character and broad configuration choice rather than the most polished or tech-forward option.

The Tacoma also shows strong market appeal, with 25.6% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback highlights the Tacoma’s reliability, dependability, and durability, with owners also pointing to its trouble-free nature and strong long-term appeal. The expert notes reinforce that reputation, describing Toyota’s reliability record as excellent and calling out the truck’s solid reputation for long-term ownership.

Toyota also backs the truck with a three-year, 60,000 km basic warranty and a five-year, 100,000 km powertrain warranty. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that a truck built for hard use can hide wear if it has spent its life towing, hauling, or off-roading.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma’s trim and package structure changes the truck’s personality a lot. Base models are simpler, while higher trims add more equipment and the TRD Pro brings the most off-road-focused hardware. The base truck also misses some equipment found higher up, including SiriusXM satellite radio and the larger touchscreen.
• Powertrain: All Canadian models use a 3.5-litre V6 with variable valve timing, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The engine is capable, but the truck is still described as underpowered relative to some rivals, and fuel use rises in the off-road-focused configurations.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Headlight performance varies by trim, and the Tacoma’s crash-test results are not perfect.
• Infotainment: Base models get a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get an 8-inch unit. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth are standard, but the system is more functional than flashy, and Toyota does not offer much beyond basic connectivity and navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the automatic 4WD V6 at 13.0 L/100 km in the city, 10.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 11.8 L/100 km combined. The manual and TRD Off Road/TRD Pro configurations use more fuel, and real-world consumption can be higher.

Which 2021 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off Road, TRD Off Road Premium, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core durability and standard safety tech without paying for off-road hardware you may not use. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the lineup.
• TRD Sport: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds a more polished feature set while staying below the more specialised off-road trims. It suits you if you want a well-equipped daily driver with Tacoma toughness.
• TRD Sport Premium: Choose this if you want more comfort and convenience than the TRD Sport, while still avoiding the more extreme off-road focus of the TRD models above it.
• TRD Off Road: This is the trim to target if you want the Tacoma’s off-road character to be front and centre. It adds the locking rear differential, upgraded suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control.
• TRD Off Road Premium: Pick this if you want the off-road equipment of the TRD Off Road with a more upscale feature set.
• TRD Pro: This is the most off-road-focused Tacoma, with Fox internal-bypass shocks, a 1-inch front lift, retuned rear suspension, and a front skid plate. It is the right choice if off-road capability matters more to you than value or on-road refinement.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, but headlight ratings vary by trim level.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 227 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $42,677 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $43,013 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,396 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also suggests future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. The Tacoma’s strong reputation for reliability and owner satisfaction should help support demand, though. If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, its broad appeal should remain a resale advantage.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab earns Good scores in all IIHS crash tests except the passenger-side small overlap front test, where it received an Acceptable score. It also earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. The main caveat is that headlight performance varies by trim level, and the passenger-side small overlap result is weaker than the rest of the crash-test record.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds Nightshade and Trail Special Edition updates plus standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $40,156 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $43,013 CAD average.
• It leans into capability and dependable off-road confidence.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,623 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $43,013 CAD average.
• It remains a strong choice for commuting and weekend adventures.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, proven hardware, and current-market availability, the 2021 is the sensible pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 offers a lower entry point, while the 2022 is worth considering if you want to spend a bit more for the newer model year.
