Generally — you’re looking at a 4.43/5 user-rated compact car with an expert score of 7.83/10. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its stylish design, excellent gas mileage, and reliability, and many also like how many features it packs into a small car. That lines up well with the Corolla’s use case as a cheap, dependable, and thrifty commuter that still has a more engaging side than many rivals.

The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla reliable?

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about durability and more about finding one that has been maintained properly and still feels fresh inside.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE and XSE add sport-design bumpers, a mesh grille insert, a matching diffuser panel, a subtle body kit, a twin-outlet exhaust, and 18-inch wheels, while the L, LE, and XLE are the more anonymous choices. The SE is the best-value pick because it keeps the sporty look while saving several thousand dollars over the XSE.
• Powertrain: The SE and XSE use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Dynamic Shift CVT, paddle shifters, and Sport mode. A six-speed manual is offered on the SE, and the CVT uses a mechanical first gear to improve low-speed response.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are also standard, and the available blind-spot warning system adds rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth are standard. The SE gets an 8-inch touchscreen instead of the standard 7-inch display, while the XSE adds Service Connect, Safety Connect, Remote Connect, SiriusXM, navigation, and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Corolla XSE should use 7.0 L/100 km in combined driving, with 7.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.1 L/100 km on the highway. The review’s real-world route returned 7.6 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is offered in 4 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the simplest path into the Corolla, and it suits you if you want the lowest-frills version of Toyota’s dependable compact car.
• LE: This is the trim most buyers should start with because it keeps the Corolla’s core strengths while adding more everyday comfort and convenience than the L.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla without moving into the sportier SE/XSE direction.
• SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds the sportier styling, the larger 8-inch touchscreen, and the more engaging driving character without jumping all the way to the pricier XSE.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the range, and the available blind-spot warning system adds rear cross-traffic alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 576 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.67% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,041 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $21,041 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,546 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations if the market stays loose. The Corolla’s broad appeal, strong reputation, and steady demand should still help it hold value better than many compact cars.

Because the model is associated with reliability and efficiency, it should remain attractive to used shoppers when you eventually resell it. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2021 Corolla earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2020 Corolla a five-star overall rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, bringing adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are also standard for 2021, and the available blind-spot warning system gains rear cross-traffic alert.

The main caveat is that the 2021 model needed re-testing after Toyota added two new airbags, so you should pay attention to the final published crash-test results for the exact vehicle you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard Android Auto and rear side-impact airbags, while keeping the Corolla’s more engaging SE and XSE character.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $19,751 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $21,041 CAD average.
• It introduced a more stylish and enjoyable character to the Corolla nameplate.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,266 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $21,041 CAD average.
• It mainly adds two new colours while keeping the Corolla’s broad choice of body styles, transmissions, and powertrains.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and the Corolla’s improved personality, the 2021 is the smart primary target. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, the 2020 is the value play, while the 2022 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer model-year pricing and colour updates.
