Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla a good car?

Generally — the 2021 Toyota Corolla earns 4.4/5 from owners and 7.8/10 from our experts. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its stylish design, excellent gas mileage, and reliability, and they also like the strong feature content. It fits well if you want a compact car that is affordable, dependable, and efficient, with a more engaging personality than many shoppers expect from the nameplate.

With 29.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback highlights reliability, dependable performance, and a reputation for being trouble-free over the long term. The expert review also reinforces that it is a cheap, dependable, and thrifty car that should be easy to live with day to day.

Toyota’s connected-service trial periods add some ownership value, and the car’s reputation for bulletproof reliability supports confidence for used buyers. Even so, you should still check maintenance history and condition carefully, since long-term ownership risk always depends on how the previous owner treated the car.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE and XSE bring sport-design bumpers, a mesh grille insert, a subtle body kit, a twin-outlet exhaust, and 18-inch wheels, while the L, LE, and XLE are the more anonymous choices. The SE and XSE also add a more powerful engine and a sportier feel, but the Apex Edition’s body kit may be too much for some buyers.
• Powertrain: The SE and XSE use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Dynamic Shift CVT and paddle shifters. A six-speed manual is available on the SE, and the drivetrain is tuned more for competence and predictability than outright excitement.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are standard this year, and the available blind-spot warning system gains rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth are standard, along with a free year of Safety Connect. The SE gets an 8-inch touchscreen, while the standard display is 7 inches; the XSE adds Service Connect, Remote Connect, SiriusXM, navigation, and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Corolla XSE should use 7.0 L/100 km combined, with 7.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.1 L/100 km on the highway.

Which 2021 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE, and Apex Edition.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the simplest choice if you want the lowest-frills Corolla and do not need the sportier styling or extra equipment found higher up the range.
• LE: This is the sensible value pick for most shoppers, since it keeps the Corolla’s core strengths while avoiding the cost of the more feature-rich trims.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale Corolla experience and are willing to pay for extra comfort and convenience.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many used buyers because it adds the sportier look, the stronger engine, and still keeps pricing more reasonable than the XSE.
• XSE: Pick this if you want the most polished and well-equipped non-special-edition Corolla, with the strongest mix of style, features, and driving appeal.
• Apex Edition: This is the enthusiast-flavoured choice, with track-tuned suspension, a lowered ride height, revised steering calibration, a sport exhaust, and lightweight 18-inch wheels, but the body kit may not suit everyone.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the range, and the available blind-spot warning system adds rear cross-traffic alert.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Corolla?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 571 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.15% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,712 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $20,766 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,364 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Corolla is currently more buyer-friendly than it was a year ago, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract interest if they buy at the right price. A lower entry cost today can also help preserve some resale flexibility later, especially if the car remains in strong condition and has a clean history.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2021 Corolla earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2020 Corolla its top five-star overall rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Rear side-impact airbags are also standard this year, and the available blind-spot warning system adds rear cross-traffic alert.

One caveat is that the adaptive cruise control can brake unevenly at times, and the lane-centring assistance may occasionally need driver intervention.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.15% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard rear side-impact airbags and available rear cross-traffic alert.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $19,373 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $20,766 CAD average.
• It introduced a more stylish and enjoyable Corolla character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $22,295 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $20,766 CAD average.
• It mainly adds two new colours and otherwise keeps the same broad formula.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-round choice if you want the updated safety equipment and current-market pricing balance. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a newer year, the 2022 does not add much beyond cosmetic updates.

How does the 2021 Toyota Corolla compare to the 2021 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2021 Toyota Corolla 7.8/10 and the 2021 Honda Civic 7.2/10. The Corolla leans harder into value, standard safety tech, and a more engaging personality than many shoppers expect. The Civic brings a stronger engine and more listings, but the Corolla’s lower average price and better expert score make it the more compelling pick for many used buyers.
