What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base L trim is the most stripped-down version, while SE and XSE bring the sportier look and more appealing 18-inch wheels. Higher trims also improve the perceived quality inside, so you should pay close attention to whether the car has the features you want rather than assuming all Corollas feel the same.
• Powertrain: L, LE, and XLE trims use a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder with 139 horsepower and a CVT, while SE and XSE upgrade to a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE can also be had with a six-speed manual, which is the most engaging setup here.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes lane departure alert, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, road-sign recognition, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims, and it does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Corolla uses Toyota’s Entune 3.0 system with Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, and a 7-inch touchscreen on standard versions. Higher trims get an 8-inch display and a USB charging port, while Android Auto is not included.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Corolla Hybrid LE will burn 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE, Hybrid LE.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if your priority is the lowest purchase price. You get the core Corolla formula, but you should expect the fewest convenience and safety extras.
• LE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday equipment without pushing you into the pricier sportier trims. It is the sensible middle ground if you want a Corolla that feels well equipped.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale-feeling Corolla and are willing to pay for it. It builds on the comfort-and-convenience side of the lineup rather than the sporty side.
• SE: This is the trim to target if you want the Corolla to feel more engaging. It adds the 2.0-litre engine, and you can get it with a six-speed manual, which makes it the enthusiast-friendly pick.
• XSE: This is the most appealing choice if you want the strongest mix of style, equipment, and driving enjoyment. It gets the sportier engine and the most polished presentation in the lineup.
• Hybrid LE: Choose this if maximum fuel efficiency matters most. It is the efficiency-focused version of the Corolla lineup.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 415 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.60% compared with last year.
• If you find a listing below $19,638 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $19,638 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,486 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has become a bit softer for sellers, which can make it harder to command top dollar unless your car is especially well kept or well equipped. If you plan to sell later, the current trend implies you may need to price competitively to attract attention.

On the other hand, the Corolla’s reputation for reliability, efficiency, and value should help keep demand steady. Buyers looking for a dependable compact sedan often keep this model on their shortlist, which supports resale strength over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2020 Corolla earns a five-star rating for frontal-impact protection and side-impact testing from NHTSA, and the IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2020 Corolla and includes lane departure alert, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, road-sign recognition, pedestrian detection, cyclist detection, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims, but rear cross-traffic alert is not included.

One caveat is that the lane-departure warning uses a short, sharp aural alert rather than a steering-wheel vibration, which some drivers may find irritating.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.60% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 adds a more stylish, more enjoyable character to the Corolla formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $20,921 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,638 CAD average.
• It adds a new limited-production Apex Edition with a track-tuned sport suspension and lowered ride height.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and owner satisfaction is strong. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model-year update and a bit more personality in select trims, the 2021 is worth a look.
