How much does the 2021 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have softened 6.62% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 133 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 6.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its rugged durability, spacious interior, off-road capability, and useful technologies like adaptive cruise control and Apple CarPlay. It also fits well if you want a purposeful SUV with real utility, a rugged image, and go-anywhere versatility rather than a soft crossover feel.

With a 33.8% good-and-great-deal share, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback repeatedly points to rugged durability, reliability, and a vehicle that feels like a solid long-term investment. The expert assessment also highlights its reputation for dependability and long-term value, with language that suggests you can count on it over time.

Toyota’s ownership proposition is reinforced by the model’s durable, body-on-frame character and its reputation for being able to take abuse. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is not durability so much as living with its age-related compromises and fuel costs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail trim is the entry point and comes with black cloth upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, all-season floor mats, and no heated front seats. The SR5 sits above it and can be paired with packages such as TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro, so you should check carefully for feature gaps and package content.
• Powertrain: Every 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and a five-speed automatic. It is built for durability and off-road use, but it feels slow, heavy, and clunky on pavement.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not available.
• Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, five USB ports, and a year of Safety Connect. Higher packages can add dynamic navigation and Destination Assist.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says it uses 13.8 L/100 km in combined driving, and the road test average was 14.0 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: Trail and SR5.

Here's the short version:

• Trail: This is the entry trim, and it makes the most sense if you want the 4Runner’s core rugged character without paying for extras you may not need. It includes the basics, but you should expect a sparse, old-school cabin and fewer comfort features than you’ll find in higher versions.
• SR5: This is the better-value choice if you want more flexibility, because it opens the door to the available TRD Off Road, Limited, Venture, Nightshade, and TRD Pro packages. If you want the broadest mix of capability and equipment, this is the trim to start with.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not available on this model.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 133 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.62% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $46,796 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $47,379 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,738 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently today, but it also means future sellers may face a market that is less aggressive than it was a year ago. Even so, the 4Runner’s reputation for durability and utility should continue to support demand. Its strong owner satisfaction also helps keep it appealing to used buyers over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2021 Toyota 4Runner earns a Marginal rating from the IIHS for small overlap frontal-impact protection, and a three-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA. It also earns a three-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact crash.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and pedestrian detection. However, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not available.

The main safety caveat is that the 4Runner’s crash performance reflects its age, especially compared with newer designs that use more advanced structural engineering.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.62% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the rugged, utility-first character that makes the 4Runner appealing.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $43,239 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $47,379 CAD average.
• It is a purpose-built SUV for buyers who prioritise capability over polish.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,518 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $47,379 CAD average.
• It adds modern infotainment and safety tech while keeping the rugged 4Runner formula.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of satisfaction, market availability, and current pricing, the 2021 is the sensible pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value path; if you want a newer-feeling version with more modern tech, look to the 2022.
