• Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and a five-speed automatic, and all Canadian models come with standard 4WD. Fuel economy is not a strength, so efficiency should be part of your decision.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the starting point, and it makes the most sense if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness without paying for extra appearance or off-road hardware.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a suspension tuned to improve on-road athleticism while staying within the mainstream of the line-up.
• Limited: This is the best fit if you want the full-time 4WD system and a more road-focused setup.
• 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is the most distinctive choice, with retro styling and bronze accents, but it is best for buyers who value exclusivity over practicality.
• TRD Off-Road: Pick this if you want the suspension that improves wheel articulation by disconnecting the sway bars.
• TRD Pro: This is the most capable performance-oriented version, with a skid plate and Fox shocks tuned for high-speed dirt driving.

The safety package is standard across the range, so your trim decision is mostly about styling, road manners, and off-road hardware.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 136 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.92% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $54,804 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $55,012 CAD sits slightly below last year's $59,105 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently today, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. A model that has already moved down from its prior-year average may not deliver the same upside for resale as a vehicle in a rising market.

Even so, the 4Runner’s strong reputation for reliability and durability should help support demand among shoppers who want a rugged SUV. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with a three-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and a three-star rating for rollover resistance.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.

The main caveat is that the 4Runner’s crash-test results lag behind newer rivals, especially in rollover resistance and small-overlap frontal protection.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.92% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, plus the limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $49,518 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $55,012 CAD average.
• It keeps the rugged, adventure-focused character alive.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $57,708 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $55,012 CAD average.
• It adds strong reliability and durability, but the platform still feels dated.

The bottom line: If you want the freshest version of this old-school SUV, the 2023 is the sensible pick. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value path, while the 2024 only makes sense if you find a compelling listing.
