CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 16 currently listed for sale and an average price of $34,995 CAD, 62.5% of 2021 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Subaru Outback 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Subaru Outback stands out as a raised, all-wheel drive station wagon that leans into practicality rather than fashion. It is described as tough, economical, and slow, which captures its appeal well: this is a vehicle that prioritises everyday usefulness over flash. Subaru’s approach gives it a distinctly old-school character, but the Outback still offers the essentials many buyers want, including generous space, go-anywhere capability, reliability, low running costs, strong resale value, and safety.
That combination makes the 2021 Subaru Outback appealing to drivers who want a sensible, versatile vehicle that can handle daily life with ease. It is not especially innovative or stylish, and its lack of speed is part of the package, but that restraint is also what defines it. Owners’ praise for its comfortable ride, modern technology, and safety features reinforces its reputation as a practical choice, though some have noted that cabin storage could be better and that climate controls on the touchscreen can be distracting to use while driving.

Upgraded to 2021 Limited from a 2016 Outback. Like the improvements for the seat positioning options, mirror adjustment integration to driver choice, and of course the touch panel in the middle. Will be integrating Android Auto as well once I stop driving. It has a better ride then 2016 - kudos to Subaru for making those minor adjustments. Looking forward to better gas mileage, engine now shuts down when at a stop. Heated steering wheel a nice touch. Map and driving direction work very nicely with improved notifications. Traffic jams are now very apparent. Look forward to longer road trips given the comfort that is now there.

We were searching for a safe and reliable car for our teenage son to commute back and forth to school. The Outback checks so many of the boxes for what we were looking for... with one very big exception. The climate controls on the 2020+ models being very low on the touch screen(s) and not directly responsive caused my son to take his eyes off of the road for much too long of a time just to adjust the fan speed. Were now considering models up to and including the 2019 builds as the climate controls are more easily accessible.

Im not sure if its due to riding higher or what it could be but for some reason this outback xt feels quicker than my previous 2015 wrx. I drove a impreza in-between the two so its hard to say. But the crazy lag I remember with my wrx is not present in my xt. Its awesome and more than I expected.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,758 CAD |

There are 322 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Subaru Outback earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, impressive safety features, and modern technology. The Outback’s practical, go-anywhere character also fits buyers who want generous space, low running costs, and everyday usefulness over flash.
With 34.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful value in the market.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a reliable, dependable vehicle that many owners feel confident keeping for the long term. The expert assessment also frames it as a practical, low-cost choice built around everyday usefulness and durability.
Subaru’s standard maintenance coverage can help reduce early ownership costs, which is a nice bonus for used buyers.
For used shoppers, the main long-term risk is more about condition and maintenance history than the model’s basic reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru Outback?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim uses two 7-inch touchscreens in the centre stack, while Premium and above get the 11.6-inch portrait display. That larger screen is the better setup, and Limited and Premier trims add a more upscale cabin with two-tone leather upholstery and contrast stitching.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre boxer flat-four is slow, while the turbocharged 2.4-litre XT engine is much stronger and smoother. If you want easier highway passing and better overall refinement, the XT is the one to seek out.
- Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Touring trim, and reverse automatic braking is also included there. A driver-attention monitor is reserved for Premier and Premier XT.
- Infotainment: The standard system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The single large screen is the more cohesive setup, while the base dual-screen arrangement is the one to avoid if you value ease of use.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 9.0 L/100 km city and 7.1 highway, while the turbo XT is rated at 10.1 city and 7.9 highway.
Which 2021 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2021 Subaru Outback is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, Premium, Outdoor, Limited, Touring, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but it gets the less appealing dual-screen setup instead of the larger portrait display. It makes sense only if you want the lowest price and can live with the simplest cabin.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch portrait display and a more polished interior without pushing you too far up the price ladder.
- Outdoor: This trim adds the turbocharged XT engine and extra drive modes for snow and mud, making it the pick if you want stronger performance and more capability.
- Limited: This trim brings a more upscale feel with two-tone leather upholstery and contrast stitching, and it is also available with the XT engine.
- Touring: This trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking, so it is a smart choice if you want more standard safety equipment.
- Premier: This is the most fully equipped choice, with the driver-attention monitor and the most premium cabin presentation. The Premier XT is the top-end version if you want the strongest engine and the most features.
Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims, but the extra safety features start to appear as you move up the range.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing movement to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 322 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $25,720 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $26,346 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,758 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can make it harder for sellers to command top dollar right away. If you plan to sell later, the current softness may mean you need to price competitively to stand out.
Even so, the Outback’s practical reputation and broad appeal should help it remain attractive to used shoppers. Strong demand for versatile, safety-focused vehicles can support values over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2021 Subaru Outback earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal crash and for rollover.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. The Outback also includes a driver’s knee airbag and a passenger seat-cushion airbag as standard equipment.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard from the Touring trim, and reverse automatic braking is included there as well. A driver-attention monitor is limited to the Premier and Premier XT trims.
Should I buy a 2021 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong safety, standard AWD, and broad everyday usefulness.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $23,373 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,346 CAD average.
- It brought a major sixth-generation update with fresh safety tech and a new tablet-style interface.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,629 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $26,346 CAD average.
- It shifts toward a more adventure-focused Wilderness setup with tougher off-road intent.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-round pick if you want the Outback’s core strengths at a softer price than newer examples. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money while keeping the same practical formula.
