CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 127 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,596 CAD, 31.5% of 2021 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Subaru Outback 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Subaru Outback stands out as a raised, all-wheel drive station wagon that leans into practicality rather than fashion. It is described as tough, economical, and slow, which captures its appeal well: this is a vehicle that prioritises everyday usefulness over flash. Subaru’s approach gives it a distinctly old-school character, but the Outback still offers the essentials many buyers want, including generous space, go-anywhere capability, reliability, low running costs, strong resale value, and safety.
That combination makes the 2021 Subaru Outback appealing to drivers who want a sensible, versatile vehicle that can handle daily life with ease. It is not especially innovative or stylish, and its lack of speed is part of the package, but that restraint is also what defines it. Owners’ praise for its comfortable ride, modern technology, and safety features reinforces its reputation as a practical choice, though some have noted that cabin storage could be better and that climate controls on the touchscreen can be distracting to use while driving.

Upgraded to 2021 Limited from a 2016 Outback. Like the improvements for the seat positioning options, mirror adjustment integration to driver choice, and of course the touch panel in the middle. Will be integrating Android Auto as well once I stop driving. It has a better ride then 2016 - kudos to Subaru for making those minor adjustments. Looking forward to better gas mileage, engine now shuts down when at a stop. Heated steering wheel a nice touch. Map and driving direction work very nicely with improved notifications. Traffic jams are now very apparent. Look forward to longer road trips given the comfort that is now there.

We were searching for a safe and reliable car for our teenage son to commute back and forth to school. The Outback checks so many of the boxes for what we were looking for... with one very big exception. The climate controls on the 2020+ models being very low on the touch screen(s) and not directly responsive caused my son to take his eyes off of the road for much too long of a time just to adjust the fan speed. Were now considering models up to and including the 2019 builds as the climate controls are more easily accessible.

Im not sure if its due to riding higher or what it could be but for some reason this outback xt feels quicker than my previous 2015 wrx. I drove a impreza in-between the two so its hard to say. But the crazy lag I remember with my wrx is not present in my xt. Its awesome and more than I expected.

How much does the 2021 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,466 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $25,710 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $29,376 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,831 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.20% |
Prices have softened 8.20% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 324 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Subaru Outback earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, impressive safety features, and modern technology. The Outback also fits well if you want a practical, versatile vehicle with generous space, go-anywhere capability, and low running costs.
For you, that means this is a strong choice if you value everyday usefulness over flash, especially if you want a sensible wagon-like vehicle with all-wheel drive and broad appeal. 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, trouble-free, and well suited to long-term ownership. The expert assessment also reinforces that impression by highlighting reliability, low cost, and high resale value as core strengths.
Subaru’s approach here is built around durability and everyday usefulness, and the Outback’s reputation reflects that. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the vehicle’s overall character and more about choosing one that has been maintained properly and not overworked.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru Outback?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim uses two 7-inch touchscreens in the centre stack, while Premium and above get the 11.6-inch portrait display. Higher trims add a more polished cabin, and Limited and Premier trims bring two-tone leather upholstery with contrast stitching.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre boxer flat-four is slow and noisy, while the XT turbocharged 2.4-litre engine is quieter, smoother, and much stronger. The turbo engine is available on the Outdoor, Limited, and Premier trims.
- Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims and includes adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking are standard from the Touring trim, while a driver-attention monitor is included only with the Premier and Premier XT.
- Infotainment: The single large screen is more cohesive and useful than the base dual-screen setup. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio come standard, and optional navigation is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbo XT is estimated at 10.1 L/100 km city and 7.9 L/100 km highway, compared with 9.0 L/100 km city and 7.1 L/100 km highway for the base engine.
Which 2021 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2021 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: Base, Premium, Touring, Outdoor, Limited, Premier, and Premier XT.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the least expensive way in, but the dual 7-inch touchscreen setup is the weakest part of the cabin. It makes sense only if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the nicer display.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch portrait display and a more polished interior without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
- Touring: Choose this if you want more safety equipment, since it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking.
- Outdoor: This is the pick if you want the turbocharged XT engine and a more rugged, capability-focused setup.
- Limited: This trim combines the stronger XT powertrain with a more upscale cabin, making it a strong choice if you want comfort and performance together.
- Premier: This is the most luxurious non-XT choice, with the most complete safety package and a more premium feel.
- Premier XT: This is the top choice if you want the strongest engine and the most complete feature set.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but some advanced features are reserved for higher trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 324 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.20% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $25,710 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $26,466 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,831 CAD.
That softer pricing can work in your favour now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. The current range still suggests the Outback holds meaningful demand, especially because it sits in a practical niche with broad appeal.
If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, the Outback’s reputation for usefulness and owner satisfaction should help support resale interest later. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2021 Outback was a 2020 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+, and it earned five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal crash and for rollover.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru EyeSight is standard on all trims and includes adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, and forward automatic emergency braking. The Outback also comes with a driver’s knee airbag and passenger seat-cushion airbag, while blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking are standard from the Touring trim.
One caveat is that the driver-attention monitor is limited to the Premier and Premier XT, so you need to move up the lineup for the fullest safety package.
Should I buy a 2021 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.20% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
